COURSE MISSION; CONTENT SUMMARY

Accounting is the language of business, an important means of communication among various business parties.
Among others, financial accounting speaks mainly to external information users, such as investors and
financial analysts, who make decisions for many different purposes using the accounting information revealed in
financial statements.

The course 30426 is the first Module of two (Accounting module 2 is course 30427).

Overall (30426 and 30427), the mission of the course is to provide students with all notions needed to work in
the field of accounting. More in details, it consists in teaching how to prepare the full set of both separate and
consolidated financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement) and all the accounts
therein included, and how to interpret them according to the general F/S analysis methods. At the end of both
courses 30426 and 30427, students should be able to manage, at a basic level, all the issues related to Financial
Accounting.

Broadly speaking, the fil rouge of the whole course is the following:

30426 30426 and 30427 30427 30427 30427

Pag. 1 of 14
That said, the mission of this specific course is to provide to students the basic Accounting skills, focusing on
the double-entry bookkeeping techniques and their application in the main transactions involving the accounts
of the entities.

The course 30426 corresponds to 5 CFU, i.e. to a total workload of 130 hours, and will have 44 academic hours
lectures.

The content of the course, overall (30426 and 30427), can be summarized as follows:
1. Understand the accounting methodology with reference to data gathering, processing,
classification and recording using the "accounting equation" (A = L + SE) and then the double-
entry accounting system.
2. Understand the techniques at the basis of financial reporting preparation (preparation of journal
entries on the basis of the accrual principle, going concern principle, etc).
3. Understand the adjusting entries and identify the areas which are particularly subject to
managerial discretion.
4. Correctly evaluate the main financial statement items, according to law and to accounting
principles:
- Accounting for revenues and receivables.
- Accounting for inventories.
- Accounting for non-current tangible and intangible assets.
- Accounting for liabilities and bonds.
- Accounting for owners'equity.
- Accounting for investments in other corporations.
5. Compute and account for income taxes.
6. Prepare a cash flow statement.
7. Reclassify the F/S items according to different methodologies.
8. Analyze F/S with ratios.
9. Prepare consolidated financial statements.

The course makes reference, where necessary, to International Financial Reporting Standards (IAS/IFRS)
and to the main differences compared to US GAAP.

Accounting Module 1 30426 covers topics under items 1 to 4 of the above list (up to bonds).

Accounting Module 2 30427 covers topics under 4 (cont'd from owners'equity) to 9 of the above list.

• Describe the accounting methodology with reference to data gathering, processing, classification.

PREREQUISITES

To feel comfortable in this course, students should be familiar with the notions of a management course. At
beginning of the course, it is not expected any knowledge about the double-entry accounting system.
Please note/1. In precedent academic years, Accounting 1 was a prerequisite for Accounting 2: id est, in the past
you had to pass Accounting 1 exam before or in the same session of Accounting 2 to get the latter grade
registered. Starting from this academic year, the “prerequisite sequence” should be no longer valid (the
approval of this decision is ongoing and you will receive appropriate notification). That said, please consider
that Accounting 2 is the second part of an exam divided in two (Accounting),so please consider since now that
all the notions you are going to learn in Accounting 1 will be asked and will be needed to pass Accounting 2
exam. In short, although you can pass Accounting 2 before Accounting 1 exam, studying Accounting 1 is
necessary to pass Accounting 2.
Please note/2: Accounting 1 is not an intermediate exam. Although Accounting Module 1 and Accounting
Module 2 will be merged into a single grade in the Degree Diploma (30525 which is the average of Accounting
1 and Accounting 2), please keep in mind that once Accounting 1 is passed, then the grade is registered in the
academic career of the student and will never be deleted in the further years (according to the rules in force
at the date of drafting this Syllabus).

COURSE MATERIALS
Attending and not attending students

Course materials are the same for attending and non-attending students, as defined in subsequent paragraphs.

They are the following:

Pag. 3 of 14
I. TEXTBOOK

The textbook is: Financial Accounting, International Edition, Libby, Libby, Hodge. McGraw-Hill, 2018 (10th
edition).

Chapters discussed in class in the first semester are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. In the second semester, other
chapters of the book will be discussed (11, 12, 13, Appendix A). Please note: the exact list of topics covered in
the exam will be presented in a separate file, which will be uploaded on Blackboard.

By purchasing the book, you will be able to use a “scratch code” which allows you to access online resources of
the book, including slides, new exercises, and so on (named “eConnect”). You can also purchase the “scratch
code” stand-alone and use all the online resources of Mc-Graw Hill.

Frequently Asked Questions about Book

QUESTION ANSWER

The book is too expensive. We know buying books is an effort for students.
Nevertheless, we would like to emphasize that: (A) this

it better, you can use only the materials uploaded on

What must be clear to you is that the reference for the
exam is the book Libby, 10th version; that slides of only
the 10th version and exercise solutions of only the 10th
version of the book will be made available; that
eConnect access is available for only the 10th version of
the book; that the exercises in the exam will be set and
graded based on the explanation provided only in the
10th version; that eConnect may be useful to improve for
quizzes; that no complains will be accepted based on the
fact that something was explained differently in
precedent versions of the book; that getting a high score
in this exam implies attending the lectures, making
many exercises at home and studying the book.
Stated the above, feel free to do what you want and to
study on the materials you prefer.

II. MATERIALS ON BLACKBOARD

The slides of the course and some related explanatory notes, text and solutions of the review sessions, other
additional exercises and other materials will be regularly downloadable from the course website through
https://blackboard.unibocconi.it
Teachers will make the materials available throughout the course.

III. “WHY MANGO?”

For those students who are also willing to learn and understand, rather than only getting a high grade, in a
separate section of Blackboard, named “Why Mango?” teachers will upload materials (mainly, pieces of
newspapers) which will show how “practical” is Accounting.

Materials included in this section will not be included in the exam.

TEACHING METHODS AND STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

30426 is a "basic" course, hence the learning experience is mainly based on face-to-face lectures.

Notwithstanding the above, lessons are interactive, as accounting is a very practical course: real-life cases are
presented during teaching, with the goal of linking the explanation to the “real world of business and accounts”.

• After each set of lectures regarding a certain topic, review sessions are discussed in class: the goal of
the review session consists in showing the students how to approach the preparation of journal entries
and all other tasks concerning Accounting.
• To actively participate to review sessions, students need to use their communication and interpersonal
skills.
• Additional materials (exercises, slides, et cetera) useful to get trained for the exam are posted on
Bboard.

The students’responsibility are the following:

• students’ punctuality is required;

• students must not disturb other colleague students’ learning;
• the course is lecture-oriented but the in-class interaction between students and the instructor is still a
crucial part of an efficient learning experience;
• (strongly recommended) individual preparation of the course material which includes notes, cases and
exercises available on the course website and on McGrawHill web platform. Review sessions shall be
prepared prior to their discussion in class.

ASSESSMENT METHODS
Attending students

The final grade of the course, which is registered in the students’career, is determined as the average of the
exams 30426 and 30427 grade.

All students are graded on a written, comprehensive exam (there are no partial exams), which is based on a mix

Pag. 5 of 14
of open questions, closed questions and exercises, which aims to assess the student’s learning level of the
theoretical notions and the main concepts, methods and tools shared in the course. Final grade is rounded.

The exam is on a 30-point basis. Attending students can receive an additional point by attending the
course (as below detailed). Furthermore, students can get (up to) 7 points by carrying out in class two
quizzes via Blackboard, which will be deployed (i) on lecture # 12 and (ii) on the final lecture of the
course (# 22). These (up to) 7 points are substitutive of one exercise of the exam.

Please, find hereinafter further details about the assessment and grading methods. Please note: additional
further information, formal details and a mock exam will be provided timely on Blackboard.

I. WRITTEN EXAM (valid for both attending and not-attending students)

Students must register to seat for the exam.

At the end of the term, all students have a written exam, which is graded on a 30,00 points basis. The exam,
broadly, may be divided into two sections:

First section: closed-ended questions (Multiple Choice and “fill in the blank” or other types of closed-ended
questions) which is worth approx. 10-14 points aimed at assessing the knowledge and understanding of the
students, as follows:
• Knowledge of the accounting methodology with reference to data gathering, processing, classification.
• Ability to identify the critical elements underlying the application of the double-entry accounting
system.
• Ability to identify and describe the criteria needed to prepare any adjusting entry on an accrual basis.
• Knowledge of the general accounting principles underlying the preparation of the set of financial
statements.
• Ability to summarize and illustrate the theoretical tools needed to evaluate:
- Revenues and receivables.
- Inventories.
- Non-current tangible and intangible assets.
- Liabilities and bonds.

Second section: open-ended questions (journal entries or other types of open-ended questions, id est exercises)
which is worth approx. 16-20 points aimed at assessing the application of the knowledge and understanding of
the students, as follows:
• Ability to use the "accounting equation" and to apply the double-entry accounting system.
• Ability to prepare the periodical and adjusting entries for basic transactions.
• Ability to compose a full set of financial statements on the basis of simple transactions as above listed.
• Ability to analyze, evaluate, calculate and prepare the journal entries related to the following financial
statement items, according to law and to accounting principles:
- Revenues and receivables.
- Inventories.
- Non-current tangible and intangible assets.
- Liabilities and bonds

II. BONUS QUIZZES (valid for both attending and not-attending students)

During the course, 2 "in class" short quizzes are given to the students via BlackBoard. These tests consist of
either (or a combination of) multiple choices and closed-ended questions. They approximately last 10-15
minutes and their main goal is to foster continuous assessment and participation.

Pag. 6 of 14
The release date of the quizzes is scheduled during the following lessons:
• Quiz 1: lesson # 12.
• Quiz 2: lesson # 22.

Solution of the quizzes will not be released. To make the quizzes, the laptop is warmly recommended. It is also
warmly recommended that you set your device installing the “Bocconi-Studenti” WiFi.

It is strictly forbidden to make quizzes outside the classroom. On the abovementioned dates, it is strictly
forbidden to be late and to leave the classroom before the end of the lecture. Cross-checks with the attendance
system will be carried out. Sanctions are applied according to the Honor Code.

Each of the two quizzes is graded between 0,00 and 3,50 points.

At end of the course, points of the two quizzes are added up (if a student is absent on one date of the quiz,
points are zero for that single quiz and total points coincide with points of the single quiz carried out).

By making the quizzes, a student can achieve up to 7,00 points as “bonus quizzes”.

Such (up to) 7,00 “bonus points” give the students the following: on the date of the exam, they are allowed TO
SKIP one exercise (chosen by the instructors) which is automatically graded with the points scored in the
quizzes. In other words, these points are not “in addition to” the grade of the exam, but rather these points are
“SUBSTITUTIVE” of an exercise in the exam which is weighed 7 points.

In light of the above, all students who are happy with their grade achieved in the “bonus quizzes” have an exam
on 23 point basis, as they automatically get a certain, predefined number of “bonus points” in one exercise.
Otherwise, whether a student is unhappy with the points achieved in the “bonus quizzes”, he/she is allowed to
make the exercise in the exam. The grade of the exercise of the exam overrides the points scored in the Bonus
Quizzes.

Please, note: “bonus quizzes” points are considered the ordinary method for grading, and the exercise in the
exam is considered an exception. So, if you are unhappy with the bonus quizzes and you want to make the
exercise of the exam which is graded 7 points instead of maintaining the points scored in the bonus quizzes,
you must tick a dedicated box in the exam and sign it as explicit confirmation that you refuse the grade
obtained in the quizzes.

The “bonus quizzes” may be used in the following exam sessions:

• 13/01/2020
• 04/02/2020
• 14/07/2020
• 25/08/2020

In any possible scenario (absence, failure, withdraw) occurring in one exam session, the “bonus quizzes” is still
valid and still may be used in the subsequent sessions, up to the session dated 25/08/2020 (included).

After 25/08/2020 the bonus quizzes is in any case over.

III. BONUS ATTENDANCE (valid only for attending students)

Attendance of students is assessed through the “Attendance” procedure. To be considered “attending”, students
are required to be present on more than 75% of lessons (at least 17 lectures over 22). An attendance registered
“late” is not valid.

Pag. 7 of 14
If students attend more than 75% of lessons, they achieve a “bonus attendance”.

The “bonus attendance” consists in ADDITIONAL + 1,00 point, which will be added to the points scored in the
“written exam”.

The “bonus attendance” may be used in the following exam sessions:

• 13/01/2020
• 04/02/2020
• 14/07/2020
• 25/08/2020

In case the student is registered at the exam on a certain session (example 13/01/2020), but he does not attend it
(absent), then the “bonus attendance” is still valid and still may be used in the subsequent session (example on
04/02/2020).

In case the student attends the exam on a certain session (example (13/01/2020), and he/she withdraws during
the exam or fails, the bonus is no more usable on the subsequent sessions.

After 25/08/2020 the bonus is in any case over.

CLASS TIMETABLE AND ROOM

Students are required to download class timetable and classroom on You@B Agenda, and/or on Bocconi
website: http://www.unibocconi.it (Quick reference for> Current Students > Timetables, Calendars and
Rooms> ClassTimetable).

Please check in continuous the class and room timetable, as it may change during the semester.

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
Immediately after their election, class representatives are kindly asked to get in touch via email with the Course
Coordinator (luca.scarani@unibocconi.it).
Any initiative of single students who are not class representatives, “on behalf of the class”, is unacceptable.

PAPER SHOW

During the semester, solutions of the quizzes will not be deployed. The grader is a machine, so there is no
chance to make mistakes in grading or adding up the relevant points on the side of the instructor, and if you
make mistakes means that you were not prepared or not careful enough, it’s not because of the grader.

In all exam sessions, multiple choices will be graded using the machine (“AutoGrader”) which reads your
answers and assigns points automatically. Paper show of the exam will not include the multiple choice section,
because the grader is a machine, so there is no chance to make mistakes in grading or adding up the relevant
points on the side of the instructor. If you make mistakes, means that you were not prepared or not careful
enough, it’s not because of the grader.

For the rest of the exam, the office hours specifically dedicated to view the exams corrections will be promptly
communicated. During the paper show, it will be possible to check the exam (except multiple choices) and the
correct grading. During the paper show, instructors are available for clarifications.
Please note: Once the grades related to each exam date are communicated to students, the instructors will set
a special (and unique) office hour for “exam inspection-paper show”. Please, note that INSPECTIONS WILL
NOT BE ALLOWED OUTSIDE THE SINGLE OFFICIAL “EXAM INSPECTION” SESSIONS. NO
EXCEPTIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE.

Please note: according to par. 7.9 of the “GUIDES TO THE UNIVERSITY” available online, students are
not allowed to delegate third parties to view their exams papers.

for two months and I am unable to come to the paper show. I always use paper shows as
a moment of growth and understanding especially considering that they will be useful
for my future career and exams such as accounting.
I was wondering If there was any other way I can contact you (telephone, Skype, etc.) in
order to discuss my exam as I won’t be able to fly to Milan.

TEACHERS’ OFFICE HOURS

Office hours are available on Bocconi website:
(Quick reference for > Current Students > Timetables, Calendars and Rooms > Faculty Office Hours)
Office hours may change: please check the website.

Please keep in mind that instructors are available throughout the semester for their office hours. Instructors
are not required to answer your questions via e-mail, specially near the date of the exam. In fact, instructors
teach, instructors are not an online Q&A service provider.

Hence if you have questions, teachers will be glad to provide all support needed throughout the semester in the
office hour dedicated.

Please do NOT start asking via email questions, generated by the panic, on the days prior to the exams. These
emails, like any other question throughout the semester which is answered in the Syllabus, will not be replied.
