Scale practice plays an essential part in developing a pianist’ ls, and time devoted to these exercises within esch practice session will {improve keyboard fluency. Not only can many areas of piano technique be developed through scale practice (such as posture, hand position, co-ordination, balance between the hands and movesent of the arm), but the sense of key and pattorn acquired through familiarity with scales and arpeggios has several benefits ft speeds up the learning of nev pieces, develops evenness of ine and quality of tone, builds aural awareness, and increases familiarity with the seography ofthe piano. About this book ‘The requirements are printed in this book within a towo-octave range, as finger patterns are sufficiently established within this compass and unnecessary duplication of information is avoided. ‘The printed pitews havebeen chosen primarily for case of reading and the stating notes may not always ‘bein the most appropriate or comfortable octave(s). ‘Candidates are therefore free to statin a different ‘octave as long asthe required range i covered. ‘The printed xhythmic groupings are not compulsory; of overriding importance is tha the requirements are played with shythmic evenness and without undue accentuation, For the exam Tempo The given metronome marks indicate mininacm recommended speeds and serve as a guide to the expectations of the examinee Experienced teachers will know what their candidates ate able to achieve safely, but it is important to avold accurate but laboured playing which shows that the scale or (© 2a by The Associated Board ofthe Royal choos of Masic arpeggio has been memorized but lacs the finger facility thatis ouch an important part of developing technique. Fingering ‘The suggested fingerings shown here are neither bligatory nor exhaustive; any practical and systematic fingering which produces a good result ‘willbe accepted in the exam. Some alternative fingering is shown as follows: 4/3, The decision 1s to which fingering to adopt will depend on the ‘size and shape of the player's hand, and eandidates should experiment to find solutions that work far ‘them. (Examiners will not comment on the choice of ‘ingeting, unless it interferes with the performance.) On the day All requirements must be played from memory. The ‘examiner will ask for atleast one of each type of scale ‘ot arpeggio required, and will aim to hear a balance of legato and staccato, as appropriate. “The examiner willbe looking for: 4 positive sense of rhythm without undue accentuation even, firm tone and a musical curve good legato and crisp staccato accurate and fluent realization ofthe different types of scales and arpeggios convincing negotiation of technical challenges such as smooth passage of the thumb and hhand co-ordination, Reference slays be rd tothe bus fo the yarn fe vee ‘whieh the oom iste akan incase ay anges have been made othe element General information on the oam canbe found in Exton Information & Regulate and nthe guide or canst, teachess and parent Te Mae Esa These nd the ylabos document ar avalable oni st wivweabrien ot 26 wel aa fee ‘charge from ADRSM local representatives, FEUD caer niasaea¥@) [SCALES cain metic ontnamctomi] ——ATYABE clowoctwe) J =76 8, ATARI, Hastie (Qegsto, hands together one octave epart and baads separately) CAMA (C major) (Ci) (C minor melodie) S43 2 15342 3 CRPUNB (C minor harmonic) GA (G major) Sarena. asa psd GiB (G minor melodic) G09 (G minor harmonic) 2 A807 DXB (O major) “i zo aaerisr gaa DER/NIB (D minor melodic) ‘ 2 aed DFM (D minor hartnonic) 5 2343 AKIB (A major) S43 8 r AEE (A minor melodic) pepe dd SS Rassias SS SE SS ea ae AUREL (A minor harmonic) BY (FIBT) (scates(cont.)] APA cow ostnes) J =76 EXIS (E major) 5 T2230 Ese#/11A_(E minor melodic) 5 saazh #10138 (E minor harmonic) 3 23d BAMA (B major) oeitsed sgn 433 BEF (B minor melodic) T2302 128 agsag dh eset 3 B0P5/148 (B minor harmonic) eTaad 4 3u3 b 118 (SHISG) [FH major (enharmonic GE)] Uti? sz 244 Wo =r AE HEARNE (FE minor mefodic) 33% a 244 woad ce at §f BUENA (F¥ minor harmonic) zs st ‘O18 (AHIAIC) [Db major (enharmonic CD], a 41233 ha 1 at Sci f@NiM (HHO) [CH minor melodic (enharmonic D4] aah Dp2at 3 ta Tad {CURSE (WD) (CF minor harmonic (enharmonic D})] eg 9 itiaareniiane 13 sar 43 UY (TB) tscates(cont.)] ATABE tour ccinves) J = 76 ‘AIK (Ab major) 2 3223 32 ae 7 ic effi (SHFIR¥A) IGE minor melodic (enharmonic Ab)] eg eee ea ene, SSIs ss 2 Zags a 21 3 * $2 7 1 B1)\9 (HIYA) [GF minor harmonic (enharmonic Ab)] 3 Saas 21 %=A5H Eb major) 3 s2ig2 SE BERNE Eb minor melodic) 2 Ye AFB (Eb minor harmonic) tate?
