Happy Families: Spanish culture

Teaching notes
This is a revision card game based on ‘Happy Families’. You will need to copy and cut up one set
of the playing cards for each group of three to four students. The aim of the game is for
students to collect as many complete ‘families’ (in this case, sets of six cards on the same topic)
as they can in the time available.

Rules of the game

 The dealer in each group should shuffle the pack and deal out five to ten cards to each
player, depending on the size of the group. Students need to hide their cards from their
fellow players.
 Any remaining cards (the ‘baraja’) are placed face down in a pile in the middle of the table.
 The dealer starts by asking another player for a card needed to complete a ‘family’. If the
other player has the card, it must be handed over.
 The first player can continue asking anyone for cards until they ask a player who doesn’t
have a card from that ‘family’, at which point they can take a card from the ‘baraja’.
 Play then continues in a clockwise direction.
 Any player can retake the cards taken in previous rounds.
 When a player gathers a set of six cards in the same topic ‘family’, the set must be placed
face down on the table in front of him/her. The player who collects the most sets is the
winner (within the time you have allotted to the game).
The following useful phrases can be projected to encourage students to play in Spanish:

Me toca / te toca. My turn / Your turn

En la familia … dame … por favor. In the … family, I would like … please.

¡Ahí tienes! Here you go!

Gracias. Thanks.

Otra vez. Again.

Roba. Go fish (pick up from the stack).

Lo siento, no. Sorry, no.

¡Tengo una familia! I have a family!

¡Gano / He ganado! I’m winning / I’ve won!
