NATIVITY PLAY “NO ORDINARY NIGHT”

(EVERYONE STARTS IN LIGHT #2 STANDING IN

MUSIC SPOTS)

Opening Song: Keep Christ in Christmas “A Tree

Lot Christmas”
(EVERYONE GOES BEHIND STABLE EXCEPT
NARRATOR WHO GOES TO PODIUM)
NARRATOR: We are about to enjoy a story that has been
told and retold for two thousand years. The Nativity reveals
something very special about God – that he was prepared to
be with us and live among us.
Imagine the stars in the sky, the countless constellations,
the sprawling Solar System. And among it a little planet
called Earth. God made all of those things, and all of the
people and inhabitants of our planet. Just over two
thousand years ago, knowing we needed him, God came
down to be with us, and reconcile us back to Him.
He could have come in majesty, but he didn’t. God chose to
send his Son to be born among the forgotten, the
overlooked and the poorest. This is the story of how God
came to be with us in order to save us.
The story opens with a young woman named Mary.
(ENTERS PREGNANT MARY)
NARRATOR: Unless you look a bit deeper, there was
nothing particularly remarkable about Mary. She was a girl
from a town called Nazareth, and she was engaged to be
married to Joseph. God chose her and then she became
remarkable.
(ENTER SPEAKING ANGEL)
NARRATOR: She was so important that God sent an
angel down from heaven with a message for her.
SPEAKING ANGEL: Hello – you are very special! God
is with you.
(Mary falls to knees)

NARRATOR: But Mary found it hard to understand why

the angel had come to see her. She was just an ordinary
woman. She worried what the angel meant by the greeting.
Seeing she was scared, the angel said...
SPEAKING ANGEL: Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is very
pleased with you. You will give birth to a son. You will call
him Jesus. He will be called the Son of the Most High.
(Mary stands back up)
MARY: I don’t understand. I am not yet married – I am a
virgin. How can I have a son?
SPEAKING ANGEL: The Holy Spirit will come. And His
power will give you a baby. People will call him the Son of
God.
MARY: I am a servant of God. I believe it will happen just
as you said.
(SPEAKING ANGEL EXITS TO BEHIND STABLE)

NARRATOR: The angel departed – leaving Mary excited

about the news of the baby, and she told Joseph – the man
she was about to marry – all about it.
JOSEPH ENTERS AND APPROACHES MARY

Mary: Joseph - an angel visited me and told me I

was going to have a baby and that He was the Son of
God.
Joseph: An angel visited me too. Can you believe we will
be the parents of Immanuel!
NARRATOR: Then the Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus,
who ruled over the land, sent an order saying that a count
of every single person in the country was needed. So
everyone – including Mary and Joseph – had to go back to
their home town to be counted. Joseph came from a
faraway town called Bethlehem. Because Mary was
engaged to be his wife, she came with him to Bethlehem.

MARY AND JOSEPH WALK PRETENDING TO MAKE

A LONG JOURNEY WHILE NARRATOR SAYS LINE
BELOW.

NARRATOR: During the journey, Mary was very nearly

ready to give birth to the baby. Although tired and weary,
Mary and Joseph travelled for many miles.
When they arrived in Bethlehem, they knocked on every
door in the town, looking for a place to stay – but
everywhere was full of people.
Each time they were given the same answer - NO ROOM.
Mary and Joseph nearly gave up, but then they tried the
very last guest house.

(INNKEEPER ENTERS FROM THE OPPOSITE
SIDE AND WALK ACROSS THE STABLE TO
GREET MARY AND JOSEPH)

(JOSEPH AND MARY SHOULD NOW BE AT THE

STABLE)
JOSEPH: Please, please help! My wife is about to have a
baby. Do you have a room?
INNKEEPER: I’m so sorry. All my rooms are full with
guests from across the country. All I can offer is this stable,
where we keep all the animals.
JOSEPH: Thank you so much, we’ll take it.
MARY: Thank you. We are so tired and my time as come
at least we have a place to stay tonight!
NARRATOR: So Mary and Joseph went to stay in the
stable. It was a very difficult place to bring a new life into
the world. (MARY AND JOSEPH SHOULD QUIETLY
SLIP OUT OF THE STABLE)Dirty and smelly. But Mary
and Joseph made the best of it.

NARRATOR: When the baby came, they wrapped little
Jesus in the clothes they had. They didn’t have anything to
put him in. So they placed the Son of God in a manger – a
trough that is used to feed animals.
(MARY WRAPS JESUS IN BLANKET AND PLACES
HIM IN THE MANGER)
NARRATOR: I’m not sure this is what Mary was
expecting. The angel said Jesus would be called Son of the
Most High. But as she looked at the sleeping baby in the
manger, she knew that He was a precious gift.
MARY: Wow what an amazing night - I don’t ever want to
forget a single detail of it.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, in some fields nearby, a group
of shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks.
NARRATOR: It was night-time, and they were surprised –
to say the least – to see an angel of the Lord appear in front
of them - glory of God shone all around the shepherds –
and the shepherds were terrified and surprised when the
angel spoke to them.
SPEAKING ANGEL ENTERS
(SHEPHERDS BACK AWAY FROM THE ANGEL,
SCARED)

SPEAKING ANGEL: Do not be afraid. I bring you news

of great joy. Good news for people across the world. Today
in Bethlehem a Savior has been born. You will find a baby
lying in a manger.
NARRATOR : Well, if this wasn’t enough for the humble
shepherds to take in, the angel was soon joined by a host of
angels, called the heavenly host.
HOST OF ANGELS JOINS SPEAKING ANGEL

HOST OF ANGELS: Glory to God in the highest heaven -

peace on earth, good will to men. Glory to God in the
highest heaven - peace on earth, good will to men.
SHEPHERD 1: WOW that was crazy and amazing! What
should we do now?
SHEPHERD 2: That was amazing - I think we should go
to Bethlehem and check it out.
SHEPHERD 3: Yeah, then we can see for ourselves what’s
going on - We have got to see the SAVIOR the angel told
us about.

SHEPHERDS JOIN MARY AND JOSEPH in/around
the stable.

NARRATOR: When they had seen him, and worshipped

(Shepherds bow down to worship Jesus)Him as LORD they
went out and told everyone they met about the child.
Because it was good news. It was Great news - GOD had
sent a Savior! See God had come to dwell with us, not
distant, but humbling himself to save us. Mary, who had
seen this all happen, kept these things close to her heart.
The shepherds went back to their flocks spreading the good
new of Jesus’ birth all the way.
Shepherd 1(To Specific Audience Members as he/she
exits): Good news! The baby is Jesus - our Savior.
Shepherd 2(To Specific Audience Members as he/she

Shepherd 3(To Specific Audience Members as he/she

born
(All 3 SHEPHERDS exit excitedly yelling and go
behind the stable to change to wisemen)

NARRATOR: Some time later some very special people
came to visit. But they didn’t come straight to the stable.
These three important people – sometimes called Kings and
sometimes Wise Men – were Magi.
They were very clever people, who knew all the secrets of
the stars. They knew from examining the heavens that a
VERY important event was taking place. A bright star rose
in the sky.
STAR enters
NARRATOR: They followed it to worship the person
whose birth it foretold. They knew that the star announced
the King of the Jews. And where would this king be born?
They had to follow the bright star ahead of them until it
stopped.
WISE MEN enter and FOLLOW THE STAR TO THE STABLE.

Star leads wisemen to stable then crosses over to stand by

NARRATOR

NARRATOR: The Wise Men saw the child and they

immediately bowed and worshipped him.
(WISE MEN BOW DOWN)

Narrator: Each of them brought a special gift to give to

the baby Jesus.
WISE MAN 1: (Standing up) Because you are the King of
Kings, I bring you gold.
WISE MAN 2: (Standing up)Because you are the Son of
God, I bring you frankincense.
WISE MAN 3: (Standing up)Because you are the Savior of
the world, I bring you myrrh.
NARRATOR: Everyone there that night glorified and
praised God for sending a Savior. The Bible tells us that
God sent His Son, Jesus, because He loves us and that if we
believe Jesus saves us from our sins that we will be saved.
Yes we can be reconciled back to a Holy and Righteous
God. That’s Good News!!!
(ANGELS ALL COME OUT ON BOTH SIDES AND
FILL IN THE NATIVITY SCENE)
NARRATOR: Christmas is one part of God’s redemption
plan; God’s amazing plan to save us from our sins started
WAY back in the very beginning of time. The moment sin
entered the world — God’s plan to restore us began.
Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, but there’s so
much more to His life! He was born, but He also lived a
perfect life, died, and rose again so that our lives could be
transformed through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Here’s the whole of the story- (REMAIN IN NATIVITY
SCENE FOR FINAL SONG)
