CONSTRUCTING QUESTIONS FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Questioning is one of the SIX strategies that is commonly practiced in active reading. This method
helps readers to engage with the text by helping readers to clarify and comprehend what they are
reading.

Furthermore, asking questions before and while reading a text will make the reading becomes
purposeful and increases readers’ ability to comprehend.

For example, the two types of questions that readers can employ are probing questions and
leading questions.

Probing Questions
 Helps readers to understand topics in-depth and clarify information
 “What do you think the author meant in line 28?”

Leading Questions

 Lead students to specific ideas to find the correct answers


 “Which of these causes do you think influenced the most?”

reading it. After you finish reading, check whether your answers to these question are correct or not.

Skim through the ‘Fast Food and its Harmful Effects’ text and answer the questions below.

Fast Food and its Harmful Effects

The fast pace of life we have these days, leads us more and more to turn to so-called fast food,
leaving on one hand the healthy homemade food and opening the front door to the possible
deterioration of our health. Fast food is characterized by its lack of nutritional balance, by the excess
fat mainly of animal origin, excess of salt, excess of sugars and excess of chemical additives,
and in particular, by the absence or presence of natural products such as fruits and vegetables.

The harmful effects of fast food on our health can be of two forms; Short-term or long-term. The
short-term effects may be such as lethargy, malaise, anxiety, etc. ” We consume without realizing
chemical additives, GMOs in many countries vegetables (corn, soy …) and many other substances
rejected by our body ”. In severe cases, this can lead to diabetes, cardiac diseases, obesity,
depression, hypertension, obesity, certain cancers such as prostate, pancreas, etc.

Excessive consumption of fast food is one of the main problems of modern society. Children,
adolescents and adults are likely to consume these unhealthy foods that are high risk. Obese
children may suffer from hypertension, high cholesterol and insulin resistance from childhood or
puberty, and continue with high risks in adulthood. In males, the risk of atherosclerosis, myocardial
infarction, stroke, diabetes and colon cancer. Women however, are likely to suffer degenerative
arthritis, increased blood pressure in pregnancy and hip fractures predisposition.

Obesity is well reflected in children these days, and health organizations have already implemented
various programs to prevent this problem, by which is not allowing the selling of junk food in schools,
and imposing healthy options. Educational programs are also implemented, teaching kids about the
importance of eating healthy foods.

Healthy eating is a long term goal, as the quality of the food we eat is extremely important to our
health. Try to choose natural, whole, organically grown food, free of chemicals, and such that can
improve your health and act as a preventive medicine.

The Benefits of Walking

Thinking about adding more physical activity to our day? Walking can be a great way to get more
active. Walking is the most popular physical activity among adults, and it is easy to see why. It
requires no special clothes or equipment, and it is free. Regular walking can have many health
benefits. It may lower our risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. It can strengthen
our bones and muscles. It may help us maintain a healthy weight. It might also help lift our mood.
We can make walking fun by going to places we enjoy, like a shopping centre or park. It is advisable
to bring along someone to chat with, or listen to some of our favourite music but keep the volume
low enough to hear the sounds around us. Think about safety as we plan when and where to walk.
We must try to walk with others when possible, and take a phone and ID with us. Let someone know
our walking time and route to secure our safety. If it is dark outside, we should wear a reflective vest
or brightly coloured clothing, and we must always be aware of our surroundings.

knowledge) or what you see.

For example: Look at the title, photos, diagrams, headings or subheadings in the article that you’re
reading. By doing this, you will be able to make a guess of what you are going to read in the article.
