Regulation
The purpose of this Regulation is to complement the regulations of Non-Degree Courses of the
Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz (IUEM) with specific procedures of each post-graduate course and
applies to all students enrolled in it.
This regulation also establish the protocol collaboration between the IUEM and the Malaysian
Association of Aesthetic Dentistry (MAAD) in order to deliver an Advanced Aesthetic Restorative
Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate for the MAAD associates.
Course Aims and Learning Objectives/Outcomes
1. To educate students on the recent concept of minimally invasive adhesive dentistry. The course
will be developed combining clinical and pre-clinical practice with a consolidated and comprehensive
scientific foundation.
2. To enable the postgraduate student to practice in the clinical practice in dentistry and to deepen
the knowledge that enables him to be able to diagnose, plan, communicate and execute treatments
in this area of dentistry in a more methodical, secure, rigorous and “independent" way.
3. It is indispensable and complementary, the research and reading of all the bibliography
recommended by the professors of the Course, as well as of scientific articles of the area. The
presentation and discussion of clinical cases will be the corollary of the activity developed during
these 180 hours of personal contact, in a preclinical environment and contact with patients.
Learning Outcomes
Each student should be able to:
1. Update knowledge in the areas of dental morphology, dental materials, direct composite resins,
adhesive indirect restorations, restorative dentistry, occlusion, periodontics, implants and the legal
aspects inherent to aesthetic rehabilitation;
2. To acquire theoretical knowledge based on the current scientific evidence, which allows to
evaluate the indications and advantages of the new biomimetic restorative solutions, minimally
invasive in anterior and posterior teeth (direct and indirect restorations);
3. Know how to use adhesive techniques with predictability, combining composite resins and
ceramics to reproduce the strength and function of the natural tooth;
4. Understand the rationale and technique of performing wax-up, the mock-up, and impression-taking
and interim restorations;
5. To know the biomechanical and biological principles of minimally invasive dental preparations;
6. Obtain theoretical and practical knowledge of the laboratory steps, and the procedures underlying
clinical-laboratory communication;
7. Perform the clinical execution of biomechanical prosthetic restorations on anterior teeth and
posterior teeth (Clinical component with patients).
Teaching / Learning Methodology
The course is composed of 2 theoretical-practical modules during one year. The first module will take
place in Egas Moniz University, Caparica, Portugal, and will be composed of 14 days . In the first
module in IUEM there will be a practical component with patients, where the students will have the
opportunity to practice all the contents lectured.
The last module (second module)  will take place in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, and will be composed of
seven days.
There will also be online e-learning sessions during the one year programme where the students will
discuss several topics with the professors and present some clinical and/or research work. Also,
other lectures and topics can be added in the online e-learning platform.
Knowledge based objectives are met by a variety of teaching methods mentioned above, including
seminars/lectures, essay, clinical case reporting, computer aided learning, practical classes (clinical
skills and technical laboratories).
Teaching / Learning Methodology (cont..)
Skill based objectives involving treatment of patients, are developed in the clinical skills and
technical laboratories before starting work in the clinical departments (simulation practice). Patients
are allocated to your care and you are expected to carry out some of the laboratory related work
under supervision.
Attitude based objectives: an attitude of constructive self-criticism is engendered during seminars
and clinical training. Although clinical work within the school of dental sciences both in Lisbon and
Kuala Lumpur is supervised, you are encouraged to decide on appropriate treatment strategies (
which must be agreed with your supervisor(mentor) and patients), take responsibility for their
implementation and seek guidance when appropriate.
Curriculum
In order to deliver the aforementioned objectives, the curriculum includes the following elements
which run according to the schedule given in appendix (1)
·         Prosthodontics  (including laboratory techniques)
·         Operative Dentistry
·         Dental Material Sciences

·         Tour of school
·         Library induction
·         IT induction
·         Introduction to the teaching staff/academicians

Evaluation Assessment Regime
The first assessment of students prior to treat patients in the clinic is they would be required to pass
the clinical competency test which would require them to complete a series of test in the simulation
lab on the dummies.
The evaluation of the students will be done by a written exam in the last module of the course
followed by the final approval for each student whereby students have to complete several clinical
treatments in their own practice guided by the Malaysian tutors/mentors and present it as the final
case presentation exam in the final module. The list of treatments need to be executed by the
students are fixed in the attachment form.
Award of Certificate
1 . The approval in the Course is expressed in the whole numerical scale of 0 to 20 values. It will be
necessary to obtain an evaluation of 10 (ten) values or more in the continuous education and exam
to obtain approval in the Advanced Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate
program.
2. If the student gets the approval, it will be issued and the delivery of the Advanced Aesthetic
Restorative Dentistry University Certificate will be done in the last module of the programme, in
Malaysia. The Certificate will be delivered by the IUEM Dean and the President of MAAD.
Prerequisite Requirement for Intake
(Conditions of access and number of vacancies)
1. Candidates must have a degree in Dental Medicine or an equivalent academic degree in the field of
dental sciences recognised by the Malaysian Dental Council.
