BELIEVE ME, MOTHER IS A MAGICIAN!

Introduction

We always believe what our mothers say. They never lie.

All mothers are wonderful! But not all Moms can do magic. Believe me, my Mom
is a magician!

Let me tell you about my Mom’s magic. Not just tricks but the magic that can
change the world and ensure a happy future.

The Story

(Reads the book)

“What did you say, Paul, your Mom a magician? Unbelievable!” blurted Benny,
my robust classmate. His Mom proudly says Benny is healthy. But, no, he is obese! His
face is as oily as fried pork belly.

I just shrugged my shoulders; then answered, “No need convincing you, Piggy
Benny.” And I walked away laughing. (Laughs)

When I arrived home, I immediately asked my mother who was cooking, “Mom
can you really do magic?”

Mother held high the ladle as if it’s a fairy wand, then spritely said, “Of course!
This casserole of native chicken with malunggay leaves and raw papaya is a magical
dish. It will help ensure that you will have a happy future because you are healthy. It
will help you fly towards the sky to claim your star!”

Mother wiggled her hips and continued stirring the casserole, then faced me, the
ladle pointed at me like a fairy wand, “With unpolished red rice and fruit in season,
Presto! It’s a perfect dining table magic! Abrakadabra! You will have a magic carpet ride
towards your dream!” And she laughed.
“Let me see the face of my dear boy.” She cupped my face. “What sparkling
eyes! My dear boy Paul made healthy by my kitchen magic!”

One evening after supper, my Mom explained to me what actually her magic is.

Father joined us and commented, “Good that you explained to your son. He
might get confused, thinking that you’re indeed a magician.”

Then mother showed me a huge old scrapbook. “This is your grandmother’s

magical scrapbook – filled with recipes of magical foods, steps in performing magical
physical exercises!”

One morning our class adviser solicited suggestions from us in connection with
the Universal Children’s Day Party.

Bridget, who looked like a class mascot with her short legs and a huge ribbon on
her head suggested, “Ma’am, let’s have a clown who can do magic tricks!”

Benny, the Huge Piglet, added: “Let’s have Paul’s mother perform magic tricks.”

“No, she cannot be. Mom is not a clown!”

“But you bragged to me that she does magic! So, let’s have your mom perform
magic and dress like a clown!” the stout baby swine thundered and laughed. ( Laughs
mockingly)

I bowed my head. I saw one, then two, then three drops on my pants. My tears
rained. My teacher touched my shoulder. She hushed the pig and the class to silence. I
touched my teacher’s hand and told her, “Ma’am, I don’t want anyone, even if he’s a
giant swine or a Godzilla, to laugh at my Mom.”

After wiping my tears, I stood up and faced my classmates. I told everyone:

“She’s not a clown. Yes, she does magic. Her first magic was when she breastfed me.”

I glued my eyes at Benny. “You know, Benny, my Mom’s magic makes my father
and I healthy. It’s the magic of her cooking made of fresh and healthy ingredients. It’s
the magic of a wondrous feast – a nutritious and balanced diet. It’s the magic when we
three jog around the plaza. It’s the magic when we perform physical exercises and
activities.”

I did not hear Benny oink or snort. He approached me and said “I’m very sorry,
Paul.” His voice sounded sincere. It did not sound like a grunt of a pig.

The following day, I brought my grandmother’s scrapbook to class.

Our teacher read the scrapbook to the class. There were recipes of nutritious
dishes made from vegetables, fish and meat. There were recipes of concoctions of fruit
juices. The last few pages were apportioned for steps in performing physical exercises.
There were quotations from great men and women about proper nutrition and the
benefits of doing physical activities.

“This is indeed a magical book!” our teacher acknowledged in admiration.

Benny stood up and addressed the class – “If only all mothers are like Paul’s
mom, we will have a magic carpet ride towards a whole new world.” Instantly, I forgot
that Benny was a stout swine. He transformed into a Genie.
