What are scientific Skills that use scientific

skills? methods in carrying out
investigation.

Basic Science Process Skills

Skill Explanation
1. Observing - Using the senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste
or smell
- Types of observation:
i. Qualitative observation
-Using senses
-Example: changes in color, changes in
taste, smell, mass, volume and
temperature.
ii. Quantitative observation
-using tools to measure.
-Example: using aruler to measure the
changes of a plant.

2. Classifying - To sort and group objects based on the same

characteristics.

1
Mr. Ishwaar Singh 2020

- Example:
Special characteristics of animals to protect themselves from
predators
Have horns Curling up
Bull Millipede
Deer pangolin

3. Measuring Quantity Standard Standard units

measurement tools
and using
Length
numbers

Volume

Mass

Time

Temperature

4. Making -Making an early conclusion, may be true or false.

inference
- The reason why something happens.
(What is an
inference?) Example: The bulb lights up because the circuit is
connected.
5. Predicting - You guess what will happen. Make an
assumption.
- Example:
o Predict what will happen if water is
added into a full glass?
o

6. Communicating - Write a report to tell what happened in your

experiment.
- Presentation through diagram, charts, mind map
and table form.

7. Using - Describe the changes that happened in position,

Space-Time direction, shape, size, volume, and mass with
Relationship time.
- Example:
The position of shadow changes with the time
because the Sun rises up at te east at 6am and
sets at the west at 7pm.
Integrated Science Process Skills

Skill Explanation
1. Interpreting data - Telling us why it happened that
way.
Week 1 2 3 4
Number 100 50 25 0
of rats
Number 10 20 30 40
of owls
- The number of rats decreases because
the owl eats them.
2. Defining operationally - Telling what is the meaning of
the object or phenomena
- Example:
Define breathing:

3. Controlling variables Example:

Week 1 2 3 4
Height 4cm 8cm 12cm 16cm
of
plant

4. Making hypothesis - Hypothesis is the relationship

between the manipulating
variable and the responding
variable.
5. Experimenting Steps in an experiment:
1.Planning an experiment
i. Identifying a problem
ii. Making a hypothesis
iii. Determining the variables
iv. Listing apparatus and materials
2. Conducting experiment
3. Collecting data
4. Interpreting data
5. Making conclusion
6. Writing a report
