CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

The method indicates the technique that the researcher chooses in research. Using the

appropriate method in conducting research is very crucial so this chapter covers a research Commented [MOU1]: Determiner is missing here

method, a research object, the data sources, the research instruments, the data collection

procedure, and the data analysis procedure.

A. Research Method

Kerlinger (2015: 18) stated that the research method, here, means the

adjustment of conditions for collecting and analyzing data. The data, in this case,

were collected from the Love Simon film.

There are two types of research methods; they are qualitative and quantitative

methods. In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative research method.

Hancock (2009:1) states that qualitative research is concerned with explaining the

social phenomenon. Otherwise, the quantitative method is a method that uses Commented [MOU2]: Missing article the/a ?

statistic techniques to analyze data Suandi (2008:7).

The researcher uses descriptive research methods qualitative analysis since

descriptive research is used to obtain information about the status of variable

phenomena in this case film Love Simon. The data analysis technique used in this

study is the semiotic analysis of the Charles Sanders Peirce model to analyze the

sign structure (syntagmatic level) and the representation of meaning (paradigmatic

level) on film Love Simon.

The researcher also uses the sampling technique which is selective sampling, Commented [MOU3]: Incorrect determiner

which means the samples that the researcher took depends on some reasons. Some Commented [MOU4]: Check the subject! S+V agreement

of the data that researcher took in the film has chosen because; the context of the

situation in a scene, the hidden meaning on signs in a scene, and also, the

researcher who wants to know some meaning of the signs in film. Commented [MOU5]: Make the sentence effective. This is
too wordy. Avoid the use some, of, the, that, has, like, in, a,
on, and, also, to. Make it straight to the point. OK!
B. Research Object

This research focuses on the analysis of the signs that find in the Love Simon

film in several scenes. There are three signs according to Peirce’s semiotic theory.

Those are icons, indexes, and symbols.

C. Data Source

The main data for this study w collected from the Love Simon film. The

researcher also collects secondary data from other resources such as books,

journals, and research, especially that are related to the application of the semiotic

theory by Charles Sanders Peirce.

D. Research Instrument

For completing the data that the researcher finds, the researcher uses only one

instrument in collecting the data namely the note-taking sheet that consisted of

identifying classifying and analysing. The researcher finds the data in the film and

uses the note-taking sheet to mark what time the signs are expressed and what

kind of signs is expressed at that particular time.

E. Data Collecting Procedure

The data in this research is taken from the film, focusing on the scenes that

contain icons, indexes, or symbols that were collected in some steps below:

a. First, the researcher watches the film carefully and repeatedly to find

out the signs in it.

b. After that, the researcher fills the note-taking sheet and the video

viewing log to mark the signs that exist in Love Simon film.

c. The researcher also does documentation by capturing relevant scenes

in the film.

F. Data Analysing Procedure

In analysing the data, the researcher analyses the data in one step. The

researcher analyses and interprets the data to find out the ideas and the problems

that represent signs according to Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory. In analysing the

data, the researcher also explores their contextual elements including the

dialogues where the signs are expressed. Commented [MOU6]: Be effective!
