Unit 2.2.1 – explain the strategic purpose of staff within the school.

Board of Governors:

These are a team of between 10-12 people, although they maybe up to 20.
They have the responsibility of running the school. In any Board, there will be
at least one parent, one member of staff, in addition to the head teacher, as
well as a governor appointed by the Education Authority and a local
community Governor (in my setting, this is our local priest). Governors work
closely with the senior management team and are based on various
committees responsible for various areas of school management.

Senior Management Team:

The Senior Management Team is made up of more experienced staff who

have management positions within the school and they work closely with the
Head Teacher. Within my setting, the Deputy Head Teacher and two senior
members of staff. They usually meet once a week to discuss issues that have
arisen and to make decisions relating to the school.

Teachers:

Teachers are responsible for planning and preparing lessons around the
National Curriculum. As I work within a learning support setting and this
includes different age groups, the curriculum may vary to meet each child’s
needs rather than the level they should be at. Teachers usually have another
area responsibility within the school, this could be being part of the Senior
Management Team, Literacy, or ICT. Teachers must also assess, record and
report on the development and progress of pupils and take responsibility for
all other adults within the learning environment.

Support Staff:

The increase in Government funding in recent years means that the number
of support staff in schools has increased. The introduction of Classroom
Assistants helped to reduce some of the responsibilities on teachers.
Classroom Assistants effectively support learning activities within a safe
environment for the children. They assess/ evaluate pupils work and report
any problems to the teacher; they also provide feedback to the teacher
following learning activities. There are many types of support staff within
schools, such as:

Staff who run pre- or afterschool clubs

Playground supervisors
Administrative staff
Caretakers
Support staff for SEN children
SENCO:

The SENCO is responsible for monitoring and managing the provision for those
with special educational needs within the school. They liaise with parents and
other professionals regarding these children and will advise and support other
practioners within the setting. SENCOs ensure that individual education plane
is in place and that all relevant information about the child is collected,
recorded and kept up to date.
