QUIZ I

Finding the Pattern in Geometric Sequences.

What is a Geometric Sequence?
A Geometric Sequence is a set of infinite or finite numbers that are in order, where each term is
found by multiplying the previous term by a constant called the Common Ratio or “r”.
Examples of Geometric Sequences:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, …
3, 6, 12, 24, 68, 136,272
69, 690, 6,900, 69,000, 690,000
156,403,134 , 22,667,121 , 328,509 , 4,761, 69

How do we find the Pattern of a Geometric Sequence?

One day Aphrodite planted a Golden Rose bush. She made Demeter to take care and water the
said plant. The next day it bloomed 5 golden roses, then on the 2nd day it bloomed 10 golden
roses, on the 3rd day it bloomed 20, on the 4th day the bush bloomed 40, the 5th 80, the 6th 160,
and so on until Aphrodite scattered all the golden flowers on the floor (if you get the reference
ilysm) of the palace on top of Mount Olympus. Athena Noticed there was a certain pattern on
how the Golden Roses grew and grew. Athena thought what was the pattern and how many roses
would Aphrodite have if the bush bloomed on the 10th day.
How do we find the Pattern?
Days 1 2 3 4 5 6
No. of Roses 5 10 20 40 80 160

Given: 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, …

Required: 𝑎8
Solution: pattern= blue
𝑎2 10
𝑟= 𝑟= 𝑟 = 2 𝑎1 = 5 = 5 ⋅ 20
𝑎1 5

𝑎2 = 10 = 5 ⋅ 21
𝑎3 = 20 = 5 ⋅ 22
𝑎4 = 40 = 5 ⋅ 23
𝑎5 = 80 = 5 ⋅ 24
𝑎6 = 160 = 5 ⋅ 25
𝑎𝑛 = 5 ⋅ 2𝑛−1

𝑎8 = 5 ⋅ 28−1
𝑎8 = 5 ⋅ 27
𝑎8 = 5 ⋅ 128
𝑎8 = 640

Final answer:
𝑎8 = 640
If the bush continues to grow on the 8th day it will bare 640 Golden Roses.
