Total score 9
Guide Questions:

1. How safe is your house based on the self-check survey? Explain the results of your
score.

Based on the self-check survey, the total number of points that I garnered is 9. If
evaluated, it says that our house needs strengthening and needs to be consulted to
the experts.

2. Do you think your house is resilient to strong earthquake? Why? Why not? Explain
your answer.

I think my house is somewhat resilient to strong earthquake because throughout

these years, it does not have any cracks or any sign of deterioration and besides my
house is made up of standard materials and concrete hollow blocks, the soil
condition under our house is also stiff soil. Our house is way older than I am but I
trust our house not to easily get destroyed in case a strong earthquake occurs.
3. If you have a chance, how will you remodel your house to become earthquake
resilient?

I will remodel my house by consulting a licensed civil engineer and have very thick
rammed earth wall or a reinforced concrete frame structure with moment-stiff
corners at the top and at the bottom, and in fills of bricks, cement blocks or adobes.

2. Based from what you have learned through answering the table above, you may
now describe below on what you think are the various hazards that may happen in
the event that the following geologic activities happen in your community.

a. earthquakes The hazards that may happen during an earthquake are ground
shaking, possible occurrence of landslides, tsunami, avalanches
and ground rupture.

b. volcanic eruption The possible hazards from a volcanic eruption are ash fall,
flow of lahar, landslides and volcanic earthquakes.

c. landslides When a landslide occurs it is possible to have a downslope ground

movement, such as rock falls, deep slope failure, shallow debris
flows, and avalanches.

MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE

1. Some factors like topography, bedrock type, location and orientation of the fault
rupture result to varying level of ground shaking.
_____TRUE_____

2. The aftermath of liquefaction can leave large areas covered in a deep layer of mud.
_____TRUE_____

3. Vertical spreading occurs where sloping ground starts to move downhill, causing
cracks to open up, and are often seen along hill crests and river banks.
_____FALSE, Lateral_____

4. Earthquake, also known as tremor is defined as any sudden shaking of the ground
caused by the passage of seismic waves through earth’s rocks.
_____TRUE_____

5. Landslides are long wavelength oceanic waves produce by the sudden movement
of seawater by a shallow earthquake, volcanic eruption or submarine landslide.
_____FALSE, Tsunami_____

7. _Pyroclastics_ flow or hot avalanches of rock, ash, and gas that travel down
volcano slopes at high speed.

8. _Phreatic_ explosions caused by the interaction of water with hot rock or magma.

9. _Lahar_ hot or cold mixtures of water and volcanic debris that form when
volcanic materials interact with water, ice, snow, or loose wet sediments.
10. _Volcanic_ gases are irritating or poisonous, or cause breathing problems, and
the release of sulfur dioxide may cause acid rain to form.
