TRENDS

Reading is a lifelong skill to be used both at school and throughout life.

According to Anderson, R., et. al (1985) reading is a basic skill. It is cornerstone for

a child's success in school and indeed throughout life. Without the ability to read

well, opportunities for personal fulfillment and job success inevitably will lost. It

means that when we read something, the purpose is to try to understand what the

author's intention is. When it comes to dealing with reading, we encounter two

layers of reality: one that we can see and one that we cannot see. Therefore, the

purpose of reading is to make the visible layer, the underlaying meaning, visible

and clear (Köse,2006). Teele asserts that the goal of all readers are actively

involved with the text, and they are aware of the process they use to understand

what they read. Because the more we read and alot time to invest for reading

material the more ideas we can apply in writing. It broadens the imagination of

writer. And it enable readers to gain more knowledge from our previous

comprehension. Most specially for Humanities and Social Science Students when it

comes to some of their subjects that requires reading and writing skills because if

they read about related text before to construct essays or present a report it is

really helpful for them to deliver it with excellence.

ISSUES

Poor reading leads a student to have a result of unskilled writing. Reading has

been studied extensively within language. According to Pressley, (2002) some of

the studies on reading comprehension has focused specifically on critical reading

and thinking skills. According to Skinner (1957), the act of language learning is the

type of routine that is developed like any other behavioral pattern. Hence, it can

be learned through constant practice. And another thing language understanding

is important before the reading materials because if you are not able to

understand what you read you will struggle in acquiring functional reading and

writing skills.

OBJECTIVE

To know the effectiveness of reading comprehension to gain knowledge on

how to write accurately and meaningfully.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

1. Does reading comprehension important in terms of writing a meaningful

outcome?

2. What are the factors that could influence the reading comprehension of

Humanities and Social Sciences students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between reading comprehension and

competitive writing?

4. Does reading comprehension effective in developing the writing skills of

Humanities and Social Sciences students?

CONTRIBUTIONS

Students. Humanities and Social Sciences students will know the importance of

reading to improve their writing skills.

Humanities and Social Sciences students will learn how to write meaningfully by

doing a comprehensive reading.

Future researchers. They will gain knowledge which are wider in range and

greater in depth about the effectiveness of reading comprehension in improving a

student's writing skills.
