Modi’s Achche Dinn in 2019 – Challenges at the wrong time!

Prime Minister came to power riding on a host of expectations of indian masses who were looking for a
change from the traditional way of governing that the governments since independence had been. As he
bowed in front of the Parliament in May 2014, everyone had great hopes in one man who had shown his
potential leading the western state of Rajasthan. Over last four and a half years, a number of decisions
have been takens and a lot of initiatives kick started. Some of these initatives have been futuristic
visions oriented while others have been bold actions to bring the house in order.

However as we reach the tail end of the tenure, the situation is definitely far from ideal for Mr. Modi. He
would have hoped that all the work of the 4 years he ruled would start bearing fruits and there would be
on-ground things for him to show to the electorate. Oncoming state elections are going to be a
testimony of how the BJP governments have been doing over all and would set the tone for the General
Elections next year, the Prime Minster find himself in a difficult situation. There are multiple news
headlines going around which could indicate a challenge for all the happy-go-lucky environment he may
have wanted. Now it is not necessarily his fault or the fault of the government as a whole, but have a
negative sentiment in the masses is never a good place for the ruling regime to be in – especially when
they are going to the electorate. Here we bring an analysis of top 5 headlines which are surely bugging
those at the strategy room of the Bhartiya Janta Party.

1. Surging Fuel Prices

Fuel prices have risen to an all time high and there seems to be no check on them. While it may
be true that oil prices are today a function of global prices and are determined independently by
oil companies, a possible intervention by government is definitely not impossible. This is
specially true for a leader who took every opportunity to lambast at the erstwhile ruling regimes
during phases of petroleum price hike. Also, the prices rising beyond a level have brought to
limelight the taxes that were increased on the fuel in early days of BJP government when the
international prices were easing out.

Government did end up offering a 2.5 Rs respite, with some states matching the amount from
their kitty, the step was simply too late and too little. It was only after huge hue and cry from all
sections of society that government brought the patch but the damage was already done. This
was exasperated by the fact that immediately following the intervention there were consecutive
hikes announced which nullified the impact to quite an extent. I am sure there is huge
mathematics, economics and science involved in determining fuel prices but all that does not gel
well with the politics of the day and that is something every calculation should consider as a key
input.
