FEATURES
Provides 16 arithmetic
operations: ADD, SUBTRACT,
‘COMPARE, DOUBLE, plus 12
other arithmetic operations
Provides all 16 logle operations
of two variables: Exclusive-OR,
‘Compare, AND, NAND, NOR, OR,
plus 10 other logic operations.
‘¢ Full lookahead carry for high-
‘speed arithmetic operation on
long words
DESCRIPTION
The '181 is a 4-bit high-speed parallel
‘Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU). Controlled
by the four Function Select inputs
(So~Sa) and the Mode Control Input
(M), it can pertorm all the 16 possible
logic operations or 16 different arithme-
tic operations on active HIGH or active
LOW operands. The Function Table ists
these operations,

\Whan the Mode Contol input (M) is HIGH, al
Intoral ears are Inhibited and the device
performs logic operations on the individual
bits as Isted. When the Mode Control input is
LOW, the carries are anabied and the device
performs arithmetic operations on tho two 4-
bit words, The device incorporates ful inter.
ral cary lookahead and provides for ethar
tipple cary between devices using the Cn + «
‘output, oF for carry lookahead between pack:
‘gee using the signals P (Carry Propagate)
and G (Carry Generate), P and G are not
affected by carry in, Whon spoed roquiro-
ments are not stringent. it can be used in @
simple ripple carry mode by connecting the
(Cary output (Cn +4) signal to tho Cary input
(Gq) of the next unit. For high-speed opera
tion the device is used in conlunction with tho

182 carry lookahead cicult One carry looka-
‘noad package is required for each group of
four '181 devices. Cary lookahead can be
provided at various lavols and offers high
speed capability over extremely tong word
lengths
‘Tho A= B output trom the device goos HIGH
‘when ail fou F outputs are HIGH and can be
Used to indicate logic quivalonco over 4 bits
‘when the unit isi the subtract mode. The
‘A=B output Is open collector and can be
‘wie AND with other A= 8 outputs to give a
comparison for more than 4 bis. The A= 8
‘signal can also be used with tho Gn « signal
to indicate A>B and A<.B.
‘The Function Table sts the arithmetic oper
tions that are performed without a cary in, An
‘incoming cary adds a ono to each poration,
‘Thus, solect code LHHL generates A micus B
‘minus 1 (25 comploment notation) without a
carry in and gonerates A rus B when a
carry is applod
Bocause subtraction is actully performed by
‘complementary addiion (18 complement), &
‘cary out means borrow; hus, a cary ie
‘onerated whan there is no undertiow and no
‘carry Is generated when there is undertow.
[As indicated, this device can be used with
‘ltr active LOW inputs producing active
LOW ourputs or wah sctve HIGH inputs
producing active HIGH outputs. For either
‘e880 the table lists the operations that aro
‘performed tothe operands labeled inside tho
logic symbol
