Lesson Plan in

Guidance and Counseling for Children with Special Needs

I. Objectives

During and at the end of a sixty-minute period, students should be able to:

A. enumerate the crises management techniques;

B. suggest ways and discuss how to manage crises in the classroom; and
C. apply the crises management techniques in classroom situations.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Crises Management Techniques
B. Reference: Guidance and Counseling for Children with Special Needs book
C. Value Focus: CARE FOR OTHERS
D. Materials: video presentation, power point presentation, rolled papers

III. Learning Activities

A. Motivation
Students are shown a video of kids fighting and arguing over a toy.
They are asked the following questions:
1. What is the video all about?
2. Does this happen in the classroom, too?
3. If a similar situation happens in your classroom, what would you do as a
teacher?

B. Presentation
The teacher will explain that the video shown is an example of a crisis.
Techniques in handling situations where students misbehave will then be
discussed.

C. Generalization
 Students who misbehave in class are in need of guidance from their
teachers.
 Teachers should see to it that they mediate the situation first.
 Commanding cooperation is not making an ultimatum and it is a method
of first resort.
 It is important to have a guidance talk after the students have cooled
down.
 The teacher may opt to use redirection followed by a guidance talk rather
than student/room isolation.
 Time-Out should be thought of as a last resort.
 The mark of an effective intervention technique is that it reduces the
mistaken behavior.

IV. Evaluation
Students are divided into 4 groups. Each group will be asked to pick a rolled paper
which contains classroom situations that need application of crises management
techniques. They will be given 10 minutes to prepare for a roleplay.

Classroom Situations:

1. It is P.E. time for the Grade 5 class and they are going to play dodge ball at the school’s
playground. Before the game could start, Emman and Nigel fought over who should throw
the ball first. They started grabbing the ball and they pushed each other, creating chaos.
What should you do if you were the P.E. teacher?

2. While the students in Grade 1- Masunurin are eating their snacks, Nathaniel and Raynell
argued about the owner of the eraser on the floor. Both of them claim to be the owner. As a
teacher, what crises management technique would you apply in this situation?

3. Teacher Dianne makes the student with ADHD stand at the back of the room facing the
wall whenever he is misbehaving and disrupting the class. This happens almost every day.
What could be the possible effect/s of this kind of discipline?
4. While the grade 4 class are working on their seatwork in Math, Darren threw a pencil at
Ethan and it almost hit his eyes. The teacher immediately told Darren to say sorry to Ethan
and ordered him to get out of the classroom. After class, the teacher did not bother to have
a talk with the two boys. Will this punishment serve as a lesson to Darren and Ethan? Will it
prevent any similar problems in the future? What should have been done?
