Essay 3: Intended research work to be done while in the graduate program.

This research proposal

should include the following components: problem statement, significance of the research, brief
literature review, outlined methodology, and Gantt chart. Note that Year 1 is usually devoted to
doing course work; make a research timeline for one (1) year for the master’s degree and two (2)
years for doctoral degree of study.

Proposed Title: Development of a Cultural-sensitive and Green Design Building for transitional
Shelters in Disaster-Stricken Community

In the 2018 World Risk Index, the Philippines has ranked as third of the most disaster – prone
countries in the world. Evidently, the country experiences an average of twenty typhoons and 100
to 150 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 and above every year. In addition, it has recorded to
have 53 active volcanoes that can have volcanic eruptions. Recently, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake
has stroke the country centered at the province of Castillejos, Zambales which also affects the
nearby provinces such as Bataan and Pampanga. The province of Pampanga in the region is the
most affected, with 15 fatalities and over 60 damaged homes.

During calamities, the provinces locate their evacuees in their designated evacuation center such
as covered court, chapels and schools. Most of the Local Governments designates school as a
facility to go to during calamities because oftentimes it is the most suitable structure that can
accommodate large number of people. However, after the disaster it interrupts the operation of
schools.

The largest reported number of displaced families in Central Luzon has happened during the
typhoon Ompong which requires 10, 500 families to left their residences. Apparently, when a huge
number of people staying together sharing common facilities, proper sanitation is at stake. This is
because the facilities such as schools are not built for human habitation for a long period of time.
In this case, evacuees more often get sick, or worse, die in evacuation center.

In times of natural disasters, power outage is also one the unwanted situations that follow.
Unfortunately, the restoration of power supply is not definitely identified. This affects the
communication lines through mobile phones and computers, and even ventilation and lighting in
the evacuation areas are affected.

The study of developing a green design for transitional shelters during disaster – strikes aims to
provide a conducive habitation with proper ventilation; to produce a structure that is able to
generate and conserve energy; to be able to design a space efficient infrastructure; and to
maximize the usage of recyclable plastics as its main construction material.

This study aims to provide individual shelter for families during calamities which can be used as a
human habitation for a long period time, that they may not be able to get sick and can provide
privacy for the family.

The primary material to be used in constructing the transitional shelters are recycled plastics which
are also one of the biggest environmental problem of today. Having an intelligent way of recycling
plastic may somehow ease the growing problem concerning this material.

This will also help the Local Government to secure the public and encourage them to go to
designated evacuation areas because the availability of spaces is not a problem anymore and
moreover, health of their evacuees are being protected and their illness will be addressed
properly.
This study shall go further according to the standard requirements and needs of a transitional
shelters. It shall consider specifications in order to be able to provide a habitable shelter. This
specification set from both local and international sources and also studied by existing studies will
be considered for this study.

This study may require Quantitative Method of gathering data in order to measure the needs and
main problems in the evacuation area that has been experienced by evacuees and Qualitative
methods of evaluating past situations that has happened brought by calamities. A pertinent
analysis of the plastic materials is also necessary to maximize its usage and really help a lot to the
growing volume of plastic waste. After gathering relevant details, using soft wares design and
analysis shall be done deliberately in order to come up with a reasonable plan. Computer –
simulation is also necessary to foresee possible problems and provide a solution for it. Comparison
with the existing transitional shelter is needed to qualify the work.

After having a design, constructing the model shall follow and test it for actually occupancy in
order to be able to make necessary revisions. When, the final design is available, introducing it to
the community can make it very useful.
