PASSIVE VOICE

 The passive voice is used when we want to emphasize the action (the verb) and the
object of a sentence rather than subject. This means that the subject is either less
important than the action itself or that we don’t know who or what the subject is.
 The formula of passive voice is:

Catatan:
Auxiliary verb dapat berupa primary auxiliary verb be (is, are, am, was, were, be, been,
being), kombinasi antara dua primary (is/are being, was/were being, has/have been)
atau antara primary dan modal auxiliary verb (will be, will have been); sedangkan past
participle yang digunakan berupa kata kerja transitive.

 Example :
1. Passive: Napa Valley is known for its excellent wines.
Active: [Many people] know Napa Valley for its excellent wines.
2. Passive: Twenty civilians were killed in the bomb explosion.
Active: Someone killed twenty civilians in the bomb explosion.
3. Passive: The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. (agent =Leonardo Da
Vinci )
Active: Leonaro Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.
4. Active: While Mr. Taylor was driving down Highway 101, a police officer pulled
him over and gave him a speeding ticket.
Passive: While Mr. Taylor was driving down Highway 101, he was pulled over and
given a ticket by a police officer.
 Pengecualian pada Transitive Verbs
Tidak semua transitive verb, kata kerja yang memiliki direct object, dapat dipasifkan.
Beberapa kata kerja tersebut yang antara lain: have, become, lack, look like, mean, dll
akan terdengar tidak wajar maknanya ketika dipasifkan. Beberapa contoh kalimat dari
kata kerja tersebut adalah sebagai berikut. Contoh:
1. I have a great new idea. —> tidak dapat dipasifkan dengan: A great new idea is had
by me.
2. The snack contains aspartame. —> tidak dapat dipasifkan dengan: Aspartame is
contained by the snack.
BIOGRAPHY

 The purpose of a biographical recount is to inform by retelling past events and


achievements in a person’s life
 The texts consist of three parts:
a) Part 1: orientation
It given the reader the background information as two why this person is
Noteworthy and should have a biography written about the. The opening
paragraph should answer the questions: who, what, where, when, and how.
b) Part 2: series
It presents a series of events, usually told in chronological order. Here the writer
might refer to a certain time on line.
c) Part 3: reorientation
It consists of a type of conclusion with a comment on the contributions this person
has made or a summary and evaluation of the person’s achievement.
 Language Features
a) A biographical recount uses specific names of the people involved in the
biography.
b) It is mainly written in simple past tense (the final paragraph could also include the
present tense)
c) A biographical recount also uses liking word to do with time.
d) A biographical recount describes events, so it uses many verb or action verb.
ADVERTISEMENT

 Advertisement is a text that has the objective to announce a something that appeals to
many poeple and that adds a well known product in all public.
 The purpose of the advertisement is to announce/advert about a case or a public, or in
other words to introduce a product to the public in order to buy and attracted to the
product being advertised.

2. Persuasive Advertising
