Assignment instructions:
Choose two problems of transfer which you consider to be obstacles to
efficient communication. Those problems need to be specific to Spanish
and English (that is, specific to Spanish speakers who are English
learners). The problems can either be segmental or suprasegmental.

FIRST, describe, as precisely as you can, the causes of the problems in

phonetic or phonological terms.

SECOND, explain and illustrate how these problems could be addressed

within the usual framework of a language course - the level, age and type
of student presumably being determined by the type of problem you have
chosen. Nonetheless, you should consider the problems in terms of the
three ’E’ variables, and with reference to Brinton’s five variables,
mentioned in Chapter 9.

Important: you have to write your personal details and the subject name on the
next page (the cover). The assignment that does not fulfil these conditions will
not be corrected. You have to include the assignment index below the cover.

Assignment – FP005 TP

As teachers of EFL we understand that our central core of the learning process is to facilitiate
appropriate skills to students to be able to communicate. This is the most important. In this
process they will have many or few opportunities to interact with native and nonnative English
speakers. We also learned in other lessons that English speakers are outnumbering since it is
becoming an international language. As the number of speakers grow, the methodologies and
strategies to develop skills for a successful development of the new language also innovate.

We are mostly focus on the idea to give students real time and effective escenarios for real
context communication, nevertheless we are giving few to no attention to the development of
pronunciation skills. As a matter of fact, teachers of English as a second or foreign language
must dedicate time improving students speaking skills. Mispronunciation can cause
misunderstandings or shameful situations affecting one way or another the student to feel less
confident when interacting with other native speakers of English.
