BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL REPORTS

 Report- derived from a Latin word “reportare” which means to carry back (re=back + portare=
to carry).
 A report is a description of an event carried back to someone who was not present on the
scene.
 A memorandums, letters and new items are examples of report
What is a Report?
 A report is an account of something.
 A formal report presents in organized form the information that has been requested by an
authorized person.
A report is a communication from someone who has information, to someone who wants to
use that information.
What is a Technical Report?
 A technical report is a written statement of the facts of a situation, project, process or test;
how these facts were ascertained; their significance; the conclusion that have been drawn
from the; the recommendations that are being made.
What are the essential points?
1. It is a formal statement of facts or information or an account of something.
2. It is presented in a conventional form.
3. It is written for a specific audience.
4. It includes the procedure of collecting data and significance of such data.
5. It contains conclusions reached by the writer.
6. It often includes recommendation.

Types of Reports

 Oral Report or face to face communication


 Written Report is relatively more accurate and permanent.

Kinds of Reports according to purpose and Content

1. Informational

 Data collected
 Facts observed
 Does not contain conclusion and recommendation
 Presents relevant data needs for management decision

2. Interpretative

 Contain facts but includes interpretation or analysis of data and data reporter’s conclusions
 It may have recommendations for action

Routine Reports

1. Progress Report-long term project or work is undertaken.


2. Laboratory Report- experiments in the lab to test a theory or to examine the validity of your
research findings
3. Inspection Report- result of the product inspected as a part of quality control.
4. Inventory Report- stock of equipment, furniture, stationery etc.
5. . Annual Report-periodic evaluation of the performance and general product of their
employees.
6. Sales Report- record of product sold during a particular time by a salesperson or their
management.
7. Field Report- description of people, places or events and to analyze data in relation to the
research problem.
