2. Project Overview

The intervention was developed specifically in the Canton of Quito in both the northern and
southern sectors of the city. ADRA implemented the program with 9 Communal Banks (7 to the
north and 2 to the south of Quito).

According to the initial diagnosis made by ADRA, related to the market needs (demand) as well as
the analysis of the supply, ADRA made visits to different markets in the city establishing contact
with the administrators, leaders and/or presidents of these markets. Through them, training
workshops were convened, initially on the methodology of the Communal Banking and later on
administrative and financial management, budget and debt.

The intervention process was carried out satisfactorily in the markets of the mentioned areas,
however it was a little complicated at the beginning due to the low presence of ADRA in this city
(capital of the country). Gradually, the program began to arouse the interest of many traders in the
markets of the municipality.

At the beginning we estimated to benefit 200 people, however, we achieved to benefit 213 people.

Description of the Intervention & Project Performance

The intervention consisted of providing training to strengthen their capacities and strengthen the
structure of the communal bank and then grant seed capital that allows them to invest in their
ventures. The beneficiaries belong to the following associations:

213 people received training workshops on the following topics:

 The importance of solidarity.


 Elaboration of internal regulations.
 Elaboration of family budget.
 Risks of over-indebtedness, among others.
The proposal originally considered 200 beneficiaries and 213 people (106%) were
benefited. There were not many people but 75% were women.

Obtained result:
During the process it was seen that the beneficiaries put into practice what they learned. A very
important issue for them was the elaboration of their family budget; This helped them to
prioritize their investments and expenses so that they are consistent and have better control,
avoiding over-indebtedness.

These trainings served to empower not only entrepreneurs, impacting not only on the
beneficiaries but also on their families. Nowadays it is much more feasible to apply this tool
through electronic formats.

Obtained result:
The result was the improvement of the life quality of both the entrepreneurs and their own
families, through the financing granted for the growth of their own businesses. As a result, 100%
of the entrepreneurs have been generating profits and reinvesting them into their businesses.

Output 2.2
Indicator Percentage of beneficiaries who pay their basic expenses

Obtained result:

Considering that at the beginning of project activities the beneficiaries, especially women,
mentioned that they are responsible for paying the basic services of their household such as
electricity and water; however, thanks to the empowerment and capacity building sessions, women
have been able to have their own resources generated by their economic activities. They have
learned to be careful with the use of their resources. 90% of the beneficiaries assume the basic
family expenses since most of them are single mothers who are heads of households.

Obtained result:
At the end of the project, 100% of all the benefited entrepreneurs got into the habit of saving in
a systematic way. All this as part of the methodology of the communal banking. It is the result of
financial education that is raising awareness in people and consequently that habit is transferred
to the members of their families. Many have mentioned that if savings were not part of this
program it would have been difficult for them to do by themselves, however, thanks to the village
banks they are growing their own capital.

To date the beneficiaries who participated in the village bank program have accumulated an
amount of USD 5,035.70 in savings and are in their respective bank accounts in custody until they
have a priority need.

Output 3.1
Access to financial and non-financial services to improve their quality of

Obtained result:
Of the 213 people who have benefited from the program, only 98 belong to the conformed
community banks and are accessing the financial (credit) and non-financial services (training in
administrative and financial management), which represents 46% and 115 people have been
benefited from non-financial services, representing 54%.

Obtained result:

In the training meetings that we held with each community bank, we tried to identify and
categorize the different needs of each one in order to optimally address the disbursement of the
seed capital (money) that would have the goal of improving the different economic activities and
promoting the development of their families.

Of the communal banks mentioned, five have accessed the next financing and three are in the
process of completing:

Obtained result:
Next, we make a count of the monitoring activities where in each programmed meeting the recoveries
of the financing are made.

BC SUCCESSFUL SMILES:
They have managed to obtain a 2nd funding. The initial amount to which they had access was USD
5,000 for a period of 4 months. 8 entrepreneurs are part of this bank, six women and two men.

During the course they have had some problems, but they have managed to overcome them. The
group is getting stronger, and slowly they are internalizing the sense of solidarity. They like the songs
at the beginning of each meeting and the importance of prayer as a tool to get closer to God. They
pray for their families, their health and their ventures. The Board of Directors plays a very important
role in guiding and ensuring the good running of the Communal Bank. It is organized inside the
Cotocollao Market at the north of Quito city.

BC BANCO DEL FUTURO:


This Communal Bank (CB) has also managed to obtain a 2nd financing. The initial amount that was
disbursed was USD 4,400 for a period of 4 months. There are 7 members, 6 women and 1 man.
This BC has consolidated and manages to overcome the problems that exist with harmony and
dialogue. The Board of Directors is very empowered. They have found in ADRA an integral service
that is difficult to practice in other financial institutions. The communal bank is organized within the
Andalucía Market to the northwest of the Quito city.

BC LUZ DE FENIX:
This BC has 7 members where although it is true that they have been facing some organizational
problems that incur in noncompliance of their obligations, ADRA has exercised actions to bring
awareness to the beneficiaries to resume savings and timely payment so that they can benefit and
continue with the credit.
The communal bank is organized in North Quito.

BC ESPERANZA PARA CRECER:


This BC has managed to obtain a 2nd financing. The initial amount that was disbursed was USD
5,500 in a period of 4 months for its 10 members. Currently, they have grown in membership to 16
members, 13 women and 3 men. They have been gradually overcoming obstacles, which is something
that helps them to be solid respecting the levels of responsibility. They have expressed their gratitude
to ADRA for giving them the opportunity of funding and for encouraging the development of their
capacities. The community bank holds its meetings within the San Isidro Housing Estate in the south
of Quito, specifically in the Santa Barbara Baja sector.

BC COMPITAS:

The initial amount disbursed was USD 4,900 in a period of 4 months for its 10 members, 8 women
and 2 men. There are people who have been very grateful to ADRA for granting them this type of
service, a comprehensive service.
The BC was hosted outside the Cotocollao Market in the north of the city.

BC MERCASOL:
This BC has managed to obtain a 2nd financing. The initial amount disbursed was USD 2,700 over
a period of 4 months for its 7 members, 4 women and 3 men. They have been overcoming difficulties
gradually, which is something that helps them to be solid respecting the levels of responsibility.
The president of the bank has the leadership ability that can be seen in the positive influence towards
her other colleagues. They are very grateful to ADRA for giving them the opportunity of financing
as well as for encouraging the development of their capacities.
The BCl holds its meetings inside Mercado Solanda, south of Quito.

BC LA ESPERANZA:
This BC has managed to obtain a 2nd financing. The initial amount disbursed was USD 8,700 over
a period of 4 months for its 23 members, 17 women and 6 men. It is one of the banks with the largest
number of members. It is admirable to see how they have internalized the importance of values such
as responsibility, punctuality and solidarity. They are people who are very grateful to ADRA.
They value the training very much because they apply them in their business of selling vegetables,
selling food, selling caps, etc. They have had problems that they have overcome. The Board of
Directors has been doing a very good job. The community bank is organized inside the Cotocollao
Market, north of Quito.

BC EMPRENDEDORES DE COTOCOLLAO:

This communal BC is in its first stages of financing. The amount granted to them was USD 4,000,
which they invested in their business of selling vegetables, fish and seafood, selling food and selling
caps. The period was 4 months for its 13 members, 10 women and 3 men. It is admirable to see how
they are internalizing the importance of values such as responsibility, punctuality and solidarity. This
is another of the communal banks that are very responsible with the obligation they have assumed.
They are grateful to ADRA for the financing that has enabled them to improve their income.
They have internalized the importance of prayer, they like the songs that are made as part of the
agenda in each meeting.

The Board of Directors and Solidarity Group coordinators have been doing a very good job. The
communal bank is organized inside the Mercado Cotocollao, north of Quito.

Indicator Monitoring of seed capital

Obtained result:
The monitoring of the seed capital was done through visits to their businesses where they develop
their commercial activities and we could appreciate that they were improving their services as well as
implementing their shelves with more products.

Entrepreneurs take advantage of campaigns on important dates such as school in September, saints'
day in November, Christmas in December, Mother's Day in May and so many other campaigns
during the year; on these dates sales increase due to the massive demand for products and services.

In each assembly, the return of the respective fee is monitored according to the schedule.

With this process we contribute to the improvement of their life quality and of their family members.

3. Project Innovation component

The results of the project were achieved through an innovative strategy: the methodology
of communal banking, which, although it is true that some financial institutions and
NGOs have already been applying it, there is still a large sector of the population that is
not being served.

First, we established or strengthened the structure of the community banks and then we
identified the needs to improve the frequency of the pre-credit training and to make sure
that the people interested have a clear working methodology.

This process helped us significantly to achieve unity and the involvement of all in a
common interest where everyone benefits gradually and equally.

The recruitment, training and involvement through the directives of the markets was
fundamental because they were already organized and knew each other. This was a great
help because the directors of each market contacted called the meetings and there, we
presented a motivational session and then proposed the continuation with the interested
people.

5. Project Achievements

The main achievements of the project were the following:

- 213 beneficiaries (108 with Financial and Non-Financial Services and 115 with Non-
Financial Services)
- 100% of the people benefited with the Financial Services practice saving within the
Communal Banks conformed by ADRA.
- 8 Communal Banks created of which 6 have already applied for a second phase.
- Participation in their monitoring assemblies.
- Empowerment and strengthening of leadership capacities of women in their own
communities and within their families.
- Positioning of ADRA in the microfinance sector.
- ADRA's insertion in the microfinance sector, through the development of links and
empowering alliances.

7. Project Income
The project disbursed up to the end of October the amount of USD 68,300 which has
generated financial income for the interests that ascend to USD 3,301.53, however there
is still accrued interest for a total of USD 3,151.80 that will be cash in the course of the
months according to the payment date of their schedules.

8. Evaluation
The periodic monitoring process in the project intervention is crucially important to achieve the
objectives. Financial control tools such as records and balance sheets help to provide detailed and
timely information on the movements of each bank.

On the other hand, using a learning method through strengthening values workshops, money
management, sales and knowledge of the benefits of good management of their resources is
fundamental for the family circle of each entrepreneur and therefore by applying these good practices
they are transmitting important knowledge to the next generation. In this way, they are creating
awareness and trying to create attitudes patterns of responses to situations that may occur tomorrow
in their future homes. This helps to preserve life.

The use of motivational strategies makes it possible for the members in each workshop to strengthen
their capacities.

TESTIMONIAL OF A BENEFICIARY

Gabriela Benavides is 28 years old and she went through some very difficult times. She had her first
daughter when she was still very young and often had discussions and fights with her partner. When
she became pregnant, she had to leave school. Her partner had odd jobs and could not get financial
stability. When her little girl was born things got complicated because the expenses for medicine,
diapers, milk, etc. So, she spent a lot of time of her life in a constant familiar, economic and
psychological instability.
Over time, her mother supported her with what was available to her; however, the problems in her
home did not end. When she was about to separate from her partner, she was surprised to find that

she was pregnant with her second child. This situation made both of them think about it and start a
business on their own.
Gabriela learned that a partner's relative was selling a stand where they sell fried chicken "papipollos"
and sausages with potatoes, so they went and talked to his relative so that he could sell them that
stand on credit. Gabriela and her partner had no idea how to start the business. The business with
her partner's relative worked, but it meant paying a monthly fee of $1,000 for 8 months.
Soon after, they were installed on Diego de Vásquez Avenue in the Carcelén sector selling
"papipollos". The detail was that they bought on credit all the prepared ingredients and noticed that
the costs were very high at the end. With the sale of the day they paid the price of the chicken and
all the other elements they used. The profits were very small, and in addition, they had to pay the fee
for the stand.
They needed extra capital to buy all the supplies and prepare everything themselves. That is where
she heard about ADRA Ecuador's Microfinance Program and today she is very happy to belong to
the Communal Bank "Banco del Futuro" where she serves as Secretary. Through the Communal
Bank she received an initial credit of USD 700.00. Now Gabriela says that what she earns every day
she invests again, and this generates more profit. Every 14 days she sets aside her fee to pay the
ADRA loan and also sets aside her savings. Gabriela is a happy ADRA beneficiary.
