Fashion crimes
…There are other laws which clearly come from a time when the roles of men and women
in society were different. Believe it or not, in Michigan, there is a law which says a woman’s hair
belongs to her husband, and she mustn’t cut it without his permission! In Morrisville,
Pennsylvania, a woman may not put on make-up without a permit. Other laws seem to be about
simply living together harmoniously. For example, in movie theaters in Wyoming, you can’t wear a
hat which blocks the view of the people behind you. Meanwhile, in Joliet, Illinois, women may not
try on more than six dresses at a time in one shop. In Blythe, California, you mustn’t wear cowboy
boots unless you actually own cows.
