Chapter 14 Worksheet 3 Concentration Units (KSK 7 and 9)

Grams per litre, milligrams per litre

1. Visine eye drops have a glycerin concentration of 2.0 g/L. What mass of
glycerin is needed to make 600 mL of Visine eye drops?

2. The label on a bottle of mineral water states the concentration of magnesium ions is 50 mg L-1.
What mass of magnesium ions is present in a 200 ml glass of mineral water?

3. 5500 mL of solution contains 2.00g of red food dye. What is the concentration in
(i) g L-1. and (ii) mg L-1?

4. What volume of solution must be prepared to dissolve 120 mg of potassium dichromate to give a
solution with a concentration of 0.48 g L-1

5. How much Pepsi would you need to drink to ingest 1.0 g of Na+ ions if the concentration of
sodium ions in the Pepsi is 42 mg/L?

6. Find the mass of copper (II) sulfate needed to prepare 80mL of a 0.25 g L-1 solution.

7. What volume of solution is required to dissolve 120mg of an antibiotic to give a concentration of

0.00010 g L-1.

Micrograms per gram, ppm and ppb

8. Calculate the concentration in g L-1 and µg g-1 of solution formed by dissolving 7.50 mg of
aluminium sulfate in 2.00 L of water processed by a water treatment plant? (density solution =
1.00g mL-1)

9. A sample of pond water contained 88.0 µg g-1 of dissolved oxygen gas. Calculate the mass of
oxygen in grams in 4.00 L of pond water.

10. A desirable level of dissolved oxygen in water is 8.0 ppm. A sample of river water is found to
have less than this with 5.6 ppm oxygen. If 1.40 µg of oxygen was present in the sample, what
mass of river water was tested?

11. A 10.0L sample of polluted seawater is found to contain 80.0mg of a toxic carcinogenic chemical.
Express this concentration as ppm and ppb.

12. Calculate the mass in grams of selenium in a body if the body weighs 50 kg and the concentration
is 4.0 ppm

13. Organic mercury is stored in the body’s fat. As a result the Victorian government has set an upper
limit of 0.500 µg/g of organic mercury in fish sold for human consumption. What mass of organic
mercury would you ingest if you ate 200 g of fish with the maximum allowable concentration of
mercury?

14. Mercury poisoning becomes apparent when a person build up more than 20.0 mg of mercury in
their body. Express this amount as ppm for a 60 kg person.

Challenge: (This will be covered soon, but can you apply ideas learnt earlier in the year?)
A potassium chromate, K2CrO4, solution has a concentration of 19.42 g L-1.
a. What is this concentration in mol L-1?
b. How much of this solution do you need to take to obtain a sample containing 0.05 mol K2CrO4?
c. How many potassium ions are present in 2.00 L of K2CrO4 solution with a concentration of
19.42 g L-1
