Chapter 1
Introduction

Depression is the common cold of mental disorders most people will be affected by
depression in their lives either directly or indirectly, through a friend or family member.

Depression is a common mental health problem that causes people to experience low
mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite,
low energy, and poor concentration.

Depression doesn’t need to strike all at once it can be a gradual and nearly unnoticeable
withdrawal from your active life and enjoyment of living. Or it can be caused by clear event,
such as the breakup of a long-term relationship, a divorce, family problems, etc. Finding and
understanding the causes of depression isn’t nearly as important as getting appropriate and
effective treatment for it.

Confusion about depression if commonplace, e.g.with regard to what depression exactly

is and what makes it different from just feeling down. Depression is a severe disorder, and one
that can often go undetected in some people’s lives because it can creep up on you.

Depression can change an individuals thinking/feelings and also affects his/her social
behavior and sense of physical well being. It can affect people of any age group, including young
children and teens. It can run in families and usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30 years.
Depression is a state of mental illness. It is characterized by deep, long lasting feelings of
sadness or despair

Women and elderly people are more commonly affected than men. There are several
types of depression such as major depression it is a change in mood that lasts for weeks or
months. It is one of the most severe types of depression. Dysthymia (chronic depression) is less
severe form of depression but usually lasts for several years. Psychotic depression a severe form
of depression associated with hallucinations and delusions (feelings that are untrue or
unsupported). Seasonal depression, occurring only at certain time of the year usually winter, also
known as winter blues.

Most people have felt sad or depressed at times. Feeling depressed can be a normal
reaction to loss, life's struggles, or an injured self-esteem. But when feelings of intense sadness
including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless last for days to weeks and keep you from
functioning normally, your depression may be something more than sadness. It may very well be
clinical depression a treatable medical condition.
Depression can occur along with other serious illnesses such as diabetes, cancer ,heart
disease, and Parkinsons disease. Depression can make these conditions worse and vice versa.
Sometimes medications taken for these illnesses may cause side effects that contribute to
depression symptoms. Everyone feels sad or low sometimes, but these feelings usually pass with
a little time. Depression also called “clinical depression” or a “depressive disorder” is a mood
disorder that causes distressing symptoms that affect how you feel think and handle daily
activities such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, symptoms must
be present most of the day, nearly every day for at least 2 weeks.

Depression affects different people in different ways. For example:

Women have depression more often than men. Biological, lifecycle, and hormonal factors
that are unique to women may be linked to their higher depression rate. Women with depression
typically have symptoms of sadness, worthlessness, and guilt.

Men with depression are more likely to be very tired, irritable, and sometimes angry. They may
lose interest in work or activities they once enjoyed, have sleep problems, and behave recklessly,
including the misuse of drugs or alcohol. Many men do not recognize their depression and fail to
seek help.

Older adults with depression may have less obvious symptoms, or they may be less likely to
admit to feelings of sadness or grief. They are also more likely to have medical conditions, such
as heart disease, which may cause or contribute to depression.

Younger children with depression may pretend to be sick, refuse to go to school, cling to a
parent, or worry that a parent may die.

Older children and teens with depression may get into trouble at school, sulk, and be irritable.
Teens with depression may have symptoms of other disorders, such as anxiety, eating disorders,
or substance abuse.

Mental health problems in young children can have important implications for their
development. It is important to understand the causes, symptoms, effects and best intervention
practices to recognize and prevent anxiety and depression in young children. Anxiety and
depression can be hard to detect and diagnose in young children but these problems can start as
young as the toddler years.

Anxious or depressed children may appear very shy, tend to avoid social contacts and withdraw
from or overreact to unfamiliar situations. They may exhibit intense sadness, fears and worries
and have problems eating and sleeping.
These problems can lead to low self-confidence, lack of social skills and risk of peer rejection as
they develop

Parents and caregivers need to pay attention to these early signs in order to help children
overcome the long term negative impact of emotional problems.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to thoroughly investigate about the condition of student in St.Paul College
of Tarlac that encounter different struggles and helplessness leading to depression. It will tackle
about emotional and social aspects, and different effects of depression. Furthermore, this study
intended to determine how students avoid the things that can lead to this disorder. Also identified
the ways of how to overcome on this particular problem.

Specifically this study seeks to address the following research questions:

1.
Objectives of the Study

The purpose of this study was to prove that one of the reasons for other people's inability to
live is because of depression. This study also discusses the reasons why a person has depression.
And most of all it aims to provide more information on how to avoid having this problem. It will
also provide some insight on how to prevent the progression of this type of disease.

The objective of the present study was to explore the level of stress, anxiety and
depression among the postgraduate medical students. Also was to find out the factors affecting
the stress, anxiety and depression level in these students. We can not only help those suffering
from depression, we can identify those who are under the risk of depression as well.

Many people go through tough times, however learning about MDD can help you
identify those who are at serious risk of hurt and psychological illness. We can adequately assess
whether you yourself are suffering from MDD. Feel anxious, alone and upset for prolonged
periods of time? You might be unknowingly suffering from MDD, a clinical illness that can be
both diagnosed and treated.

Depression is a serious illness that is affecting more and more Filipino's each day with
increased emphasis on results and academic, and less emphasis on mental health. Learning about
the onset of this illness can better prepare you for higher pressure environments with depressed
individuals. Learning about depression, and the potential causes of it can lead you to live a
cleaner and healthier lifestyle, which will in turn have positive benefits overall.

This study contains information on the signs and symptoms of depression, treatment and
support options, and a listing of additional resources. It is intended for informational purposes
only and should not be considered a guide for making medical decisions.
The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors that are associated with depression
among older adults with dual sensory loss, evaluating variables typically associated with
depression in an elderly population and variables related to sensory loss.

Medical education is highly challenging and often places heavy demands on the mental
health of the students. Stress is an external constraint which upsets an individual both mentally
and physically. The postgraduate students suffer from higher stress that definitely affects the
mental wellbeing of these students

The objective of the present study was to explore the level of stress, anxiety and
depression among the postgraduate medical students. The secondary objective was to find out the
factors affecting the stress, anxiety and depression level in these students.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between self-report measures of
depression and connected variables commonly associated with depression. Patients represented a
variety of diagnostic categories in order to determine whether information gathered through
assessment instruments was related to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder
diagnose of depression.

Findings indicated that this sample of adolescents was highly defensive and emotionally
constricted. There were several significant relationships between self-report measures and
Rorschach indicators of depression. However, in general, the Rorschach variables were not
strongly related to depression.

The self-report measures were more accurate than Rorschach variables in discriminating
between depressed and non-depressed subjects.

We conduct this research to help those people who suffer from depression. This study
give more information and techniques to solve this particular problem easily. Also this research
can prove to the people who suffer from depression that there are so many ways to overcome this
problem.
