Figure 1: Air handling unit (AHU)

Air handling unit (AHU) is used to regulate and circulate air as part of a parting, ventilating,
and air-conditioning system. It also responsible to supply continuous cool air for thermal
comfort. The AHU in the lecture hall is a two-stage cooling system.
Two stage cooling system means it consists of two refrigerants, which are chilled water and
freon.
The air is cooled by chilled water in AHU while the chilled water is cooled by freon. The
freon used in the DK is R22.

Figure 2: R22 Freon refrigerant

At first stage cooling, freon is compressed in compressor and its

temperature and pressure increase. Then, it is cooled down at constant
pressure in condenser and pass through expansion valve. Cold freon
then goes to the heat exchanger to bring the heat from the chilled
water.

The chilled water is supply to the AHU to provide cold air to the room
through the CHWR pipe. Generally, chilled water pipe has larger diameter because it is
insulated with polyurethane (PU). After going through the AHU, the chilled water that has
undergo heat transfer with air is returned to the evaporator inlet through chilled water supply
pipe (CHWS).

The warm freon will be cooled down by condenser water supplied from the cooling tower
through condensed water supply (CWS). Heat exchange will happen in the chiller. The warm
condensed water will be transferred back up to the cooling tower to cool down again.
This system will be kept on circulating to supply cold air to the rooms.

The figure above clearly shows the schematic of the flow of condensed water and also chilled
water. Freon will keep on circulating in the chiller.
