HS454 Assignment
12th April 2019
OVERVIEW
This assignment is an account of all the activities done during the lectures. The main objective is to
understand what we learnt about ourselves and about human behaviour through these exercises. Some of
these assignments truly enlightened me about aspects of my personality I didn’t know existed. I plan to
work upon some of my weaknesses so that I become a successful manager. The overall experience was
very enriching and enjoyable. I thank you, ma’am, for giving us a wonderful time during the course.
ACTIVITIES
I realised that for some items, my ranking was spot on but I failed to put forward my reason in the best
possible way. I got easily influenced by my team members’ arguements and was more focused on arriving
at a consensus than at the right decision. I need to be firm and confident of my thought process.
My highest score is in Identity, Variety and Creativity. This is indeed true as I have a strong desire to
create something or just give myself to make the everyday lives of countless people easier. Also, I find it
difficult to do the same type of work for a long period of time. I need variations and a different challenge to
work on. My long term goal is to become the best possible version of myself and be recognised for the
work I have done. Next highest score is in Managerial Competence. This might be due to my hesitation
and unwillingness to be in constant contact with people. Extroversion does not come naturally to me. I will
have to push myself until I become comfortable. As Service comes next, I have always wanted to have a
positive impact on the lives around me. I believe in giving back to society. Security and Autonomy follow
closely. At present, I am not looking for freedom and independence in my job. I am more concerned with a
steep growth curve in every aspect. That would require me to explore different avenues. Hence, I am not
looking for a stable job. My lowest score is in Technical Competence. This explains my drive to be well
versed in every sphere. I do not want to be known for one speciality in my entire professional career.
Instead, I want to explore and learn to be my best in every domain.
Analysis: The higher you score on a given anchor, the stronger your emphasis. You will function best
when you job fits with your career anchor. Lack of fit between the anchor and the job can cause you to
leave the organisation or suffer excessive stress. As per this analysis, the job that best fits my scores is
Consulting. It has the required Variety, Identity, Creativity and Managerial Competence.
I am a reserved and private person who can socialise only to an extent. After a whole day of socialising, I
need time to wind down and charge myself up by spending some time by reading a book or drawing
alone. My hobbies do not require the involvement of other people.
I make decisions in an impersonal way using logic and appropriate reasoning. I tend to keep aside the
emotions and think with my brain than with my heart. I think of the emotions of the people involved when
it comes to implementing the decision. Although there are times when I take the feelings of people
involved into consideration while making a decision.
I respect the rules and deadlines. I like to approach any task by further breaking it down into smaller tasks.
Then I develop a detailed step by step approach to each sub-task. I like to think from all perspectives
before starting the main execution. However, I often override the need for information by the need to
follow the timeline. Hence, I end up taking a long time to complete any task.
Leadership Questionnaire
The goal of this exercise was to evaluate oneself in terms of the leadership dimensions of task orientation
and people orientation. The following were my scores in this exercise:
A very high score for Concern for Task suggests a very strong type of Autocratic Leadership. This
indicates my desire to achieve high productivity and to always meet the deliverables. I am that leader who
gives utmost importance to complete the given task and get the best possible results. Hence, I would
push my team to give their best. I would always want my organisation to reacher greater heights and
contribute to the same. A relatively low score of 8 out of 15 in Concern for People indicates a weak type of
Laissez-Faire Leadership. This shows that I will give a higher preference to a task than people. I need to
work on this aspect and need to be more considerate of people’s feelings. To foster high morale, I need to
keep the team spirit high and encourage everyone to give their best. The team members should have a
sense of belonging to their team. If I improve in this regard, I will be able to improve my Shared
Leadership standing from ‘Medium’ to ‘High’.
The highest score is in Focusing. This explains why I remember what I have heard for a long time. Hence,
my Remembering score is the second highest. Analyzing and Evaluating is adequate and so is
Responding. I find myself interrupting someone who has misinterpreted what I had said earlier. I get
impatient and feel the need to explain myself before much damage is done. I can improve by staying calm
and should let the second person complete what he or she is saying. My lowest score is in
Comprehending and Interpreting. I should take my time to first comprehend what is being said and then
react after I have interpreted all the information. At present, I am an adequate listener. I can improve by
staying calm and taking time to comprehend and interpret what is being said before responding.
OTHERS
1. I learnt a great deal from ‘A Planning Incident’ where the partners of business think about
improving only when they are forced to sit idle. It showed how important it is to have a revamping
schedule at regular intervals to stay ahead of competitors and provide the best quality service.
Also, plans should be broken down to highlight steps of execution to ensure proper
implementation.
2. ‘The Interview Experience’ was also a very memorable exercise. I realised that the interviewing
candidate should highlight his skills that are relevant to the job and make a very strong impression
in this regard. The candidate should display a strong interest in the profile and in the company.
THANK YOU!
