4000 Series - Blow by - Rev 0
4000 Series - Blow by - Rev 0
We, Delta Al Rasheed, sole Distributor for Perkins Engines company ltd in Iraq, referring to customer request for
subject engine, do hereby advise the following:
- Perkins Engines Co. Ltd does not issue blow by values for all production engines.
- There are no standard values for blow-by because each case will present different values depending on
various factors.
- Blow by is not an indication of engine condition during early run-in, it could be used as measurement of
engine condition in conjunction with other factors (such as oil consumption, engine performance, vibration
etc…) after the engine has done more than 100 normal operating hours
- The blow-by values measured from breather outlet on their own are only indicative of breather system
performance not engine condition.
- To perform proper assessment of engine condition, all engine operating factors should be considered (such as
individual cylinder compression, oil consumption, fuel consumption, vibration, load capacity, etc…)
- Engines having less than 100 hours of operation are considered green and are considered in “run-in” period.
- During “run-in” period, where engine life is less than 150 operating hours, the values of blow by are usually
unstable.
- These values will start to stabilize between 50 – 100 operating hours.
- Typically, after 100 hours of normal usage, the numbers will start to stabilize.
- The maximum allowable crankcase pressure for subject engine is 245 Pa at full load.
- The blow by for subject engine after 100 hours of operation should not exceed 500 - 600 L/min on full load.
- The blow by value of 73 L/min measured at the breather hose on a load of 754 KW (943 KVA) is within the
acceptable blow by limit.
