Discharge Calculations For Drains
Discharge Calculations For Drains
Q = 0.278 x C x I x A
Where: Q = Design Flood Discharge (in m3/s);
C = Run-off coefficient
I = Average Rainfall Intensity (in mm/h) lasting for given “time of
concentration” & “return period”; and
A = Catchment Area (m2)
However, Rambabu et. Al. (1979) developed an equation for Indian region. [Ref.: Ram
Babu, Tejwani K. K., Agarwal M. C. & Bhusan L. S. (1979) – Rainfall intensity duration
return period equations & nomographs of India, CSWCRTI, ICAR, Dehradun, India].

Hyderabad 5.25 0.135 0.5 1.029
Chennai 6.126 0.166 0.5 0.803
Using the Rambabu formulae and the coefficients given by them, the rainfall intensity,
for various “time of concentration (t)” and “Return Period (T)” of 10 years, for these
locations is calculated as under:
Catchment Area
The Maximum Spacing between two chambers will be (371+203) = 574m and each
Longitudinal Drain will cater to maximum 40m width. Hence, the catchment area
for the length between the two chambers will be (574 x 40) = 22960 m2.
Q = 0.278 x C x I x A
= 0.278 x 0.9 x 92.0 x 28700
= 528502 m3/s
= 529 lit/s.
