STUDIES ON THE FAMILY

by Antonette Palma-Angeles

The Patriarchal family says a lot about autocracy. The father, being the master of the
family, has the absolute power to almost any family matters. In this kind of family, the wife and
their children are casted in an unfair light. They must follow all the words of the "master" since he
has the absolute power in the family. Even in the profession and the choice of marriage partners
of the children, the final verdict is on the father’s hands.

Patriarchal family was then dissolved and led to two important things. First, women were
given fair treatment as men and that their functions are no longer limited to household tasks. Men
started to rely on women's labor, therefore recognizing women's capability to contribute. The
second significant result was the attitude of the patriarchal family towards children. Instead of
conforming to the rules of the father, children are given opportunities to exercise free will. This
means that children have already personal controls of their lives.
