What Is a Philosopher?
By Simon Critchley

The first part of the article tells us how philosophy detaches the self from the world.
Philosophers tend to set themselves apart from what is existing, and that they are bound to discover
what lies above them that they “trip off” themselves out of their eagerness to gain understanding.
Because of this, philosophy gained its image of becoming a laughing spectacle. The philosopher's
clumsiness in the article makes philosophy itself a mere jest to anyone and that being a philosopher is
plain silly, as they say. The passage also explains that a philosopher is never restricted by time.
Philosophy is all about taking time even without having no time at all. It was also higlighted in the
article that philosophers are detached from the society. They are affiliated with no group, think of no
superiority, and that they are blind to the laws provided by the world. In retrospect, a philosopher is
associated with blasphemy. Because philosophy does not adhere to moral practices, social conventions,
or any other social norms, philosophers back then refuse to believe higher beings which made them
appear to be seemingly agnostic. Therefore, they were considered as threat to the society.
