Hello and welcome!

I’m so glad that you are learning English with me. This TOP 3 English Guide will help you with 7
important categories of English. When you aren’t sure what to do next, try one of these tips.
Print out this guide and keep it near where you usually study (or under your pillow for good
English dreams). I can’t wait to help you take your English to the next level!

Your teacher,
Vanessa

IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY

1. Reading: When you see the same words in various contexts, you will be able to use
them and understand nuances. I recommend starting with www.npr.com.

2. Watch/listen 2x: When you hear a new word in a YouTube video, pause the video, and
listen to that sentence again. This quick repetition will aide your vocabulary.

3. SRS: Use the “Spaced Repetition System” to carefully repeat words right before you
forget them. I recommend the free phone application “Anki” to start this method.

IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING

1. Use subtitles: Watch the video without subtitles first and then with subtitles, or with
subtitles and then without. Either way, subtitles will help you catch each word. I
recommend clicking “CC” on YouTube or using interactive subtitles on www.ted.com.

2. 70%: Focus on material that you already understand 70%. You already understand the
general idea, but you don’t get 30%. It’s easier to pick up 30% than 70%!

3. Dictation: Listen to one or two sentences and try to write them down accurately. When
you’re finished, check your sentences with the subtitles or transcript.

IMPROVE YOUR SPEAKING

1. Speaking partner: Speak English at least once a week with a speaking partner on Skype
or in person. Click here to watch my video about 3 ways to find a speaking partner.

2. Make a video: Don’t have a partner? Speak to yourself on video or to an audience on

social media! This is a good way to track your progress over a year.

3. Speak loudly: Shout! Hear your own voice speaking English to help you forget fear!

IMPROVE YOUR GRAMMAR
1. Focus on one concept: Keep your mind clear by focusing on one concept each week or
month. Study it and make your own sentences by writing and speaking.

2. Paraphrase: Listen to one or a few sentences, and try to repeat the sentences in your
own words. Change it to the past tense, change the subject, or add new words.

3. Write sentences: You need to create English, not just learn, so don’t forget to write your
own sentences, read them out loud, and use them in your conversations.

IMPROVE YOUR PRONUNCIATION

1. Focus on one sound: Choose a sound that is difficult for you and practice your
pronunciation with tongue twisters or a sentence that focuses on that sound.

2. Focus on two similar sounds: If you want to pronounce the vowels in “seat” and “sit”
differently, focus on similar word pairs like “meat/mitt” and “neat/knit.”

3. Shadow: Imitate word-by-word with a native speaker to mimic their pronunciation. I

recommend starting with this video about a time that I messed up. Shadow my voice.

IMPROVE YOUR FLUENCY AND CONFIDENCE

1. Consistency: Practice English every day! You don’t need to do the same thing every day
though. You can read, speak, or join my live lessons on YouTube every Thursday at 9am
EST.

2. Be nice to yourself: You’re human, right? It’s okay to make mistakes. When you make a
mistake, smile or even laugh. This small action will help you be nicer to yourself. 

3. Read out loud: When you read out loud, your ears hear your own voice using fluent
grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. It’s a valuable mental connection!

IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY

1. Repetition: This takes patience because you need to experience English in different
contexts. Don’t just study from one source. Use news reports, blog posts, TV shows.

2. Multiple senses: We often just focus on the words of English, but language is more than
that. This is a really interesting video about memorizing with creative pictures.

3. Make your world English: My students who have successfully done this have increased
their fluency quickly and efficiently. Change your electronic devices into English, read
recipes in English, watch TV in English, read self-help books in English. You can do it!
