How to Become a Fluent English Speaker
Dear English Learner,

Get ready to speak confidently! I recommend reading the worksheet out loud and using
the blank space on the last page to answer my challenge question. Click here to watch
the original video. Thanks so much for learning English with me!

Your teacher,
Vanessa

Tip #1
Start from where you are
What this means: Start with the appropriate level of English for your current ability. You
have to know where you are in order to get where you want to be!

How to do it: First, do a self assessment. Be honest with yourself about how much
English you use right now.
Do I read in English?
Do I write in English?
Do I speak in English?
How often do I do each of these things?

Tip #2
Be realistic
What this means: There is no magical, hassle-free solution to learning English. But you
can greatly improve your English speaking skills if you commit to taking the time to learn
and practice.

How to do it: Join the 30 Day Speaking Challenge! You may not go from zero to fluent
in 30 days, but if you put in the time and commit to the challenge, you will be amazed at
how your skills will improve in just one month.

Tip #3
Put in the work
What this means: “It’s hard if you work easy at it, but it’s easy if you work hard at it.”
If you work hard at something, over time, you will get better at it. It will feel like it gets
easier, but really, you are getting better!

How to do it: Commit to learning and speaking English every day, no matter what.
Do I make an effort to learn new grammar and vocabulary?
Do I regularly practice speaking?

Tip #4
Remember your “why”
What this means: When learning English becomes difficult, remember why you want to
learn English in the first place. Is it because you want a better job? Do you want to
travel more easily? Do you want to be able to talk to your grandchildren?

How to do it: Write these answers down (in English!) and put them somewhere you will
see them every day. This will help remind you and keep you motivated along your
English-learning journey.

Tip #5
Create a habit
What this means: Make learning English a habit that fits into your daily routine.

How to do it: Add an English-learning activity to something you are already doing. For
example:
www.SpeakEnglishWithVanessa.com 2
Listen to an English learning podcast while you take a shower
Watch a Speak English With Vanessa video while you drink your coffee
Listen to the news in English every Sunday and make a list of all the new
words you learn

Tip #6
Record yourself speaking in English
What this means: By recording yourself speaking, you can listen and compare the way
your English sounds to the way a native English speaker sounds. This can help you
build and improve your pronunciation.

How to do it: Find a video and take a line or quote from it. Write it down, practice it,
then record yourself saying it. Then, listen back to it and take notes on these things:
What sounds similar between myself and the native English speaker?
What sounds different?
What things do I need to improve on?

Keep practicing! You can also join the 30 Day Speaking Challenge where you will get
personalized feedback from an American English teacher.

Tip #7
Believe that you can become fluent in English
What this means: You have to fully believe that English fluency is possible, even when
it becomes difficult. Don’t let doubt keep you from taking action.

How to do it: Strengthen your belief that English fluency is possible by:
Checking your self-talk. Are your thoughts on English fluency mostly
positive or negative? Keep a list or journal about your thoughts and
remember that how you think can have a big impact on what you do.

Speaking Challenge is a great place to start!

Tip #8
Power up your fluency
What this means: By focusing on just three things, you can greatly improve your
fluency.

How to do it: To power up your fluency, focus on these three things when speaking:
Pronunciation: Which sounds are the most difficult for me?
Linking words: Which common words are linked together?
Intonation: How can I imitate the “song” of English?

Tip #9
Have fun!
What this means: If you aren’t finding a way to have fun along your English-learning
journey, then you probably won’t do it for very long. So remember why you’re learning
English and find ways to have fun!

How to do it: To have fun while you’re becoming fluent in English, try the following:
Find your favorite childhood book and read it (and re-read it!) in English.
Here is my list of recommended books in English.
Watch iconic movies in English.
I recommend “The Terminal.” Watch the trailer here.
Find an English podcast about a topic you are interested in.
I recommend “Stuff You Should Know.”
Don’t forget to celebrate your victories along the way!

Vanessa’s Challenge Question

Use the space below to write a few sentences answering this question.

Why do you want to learn English? And what is stopping you?

Sample answer: I want to learn English so that I can get a better job, which would also
allow me to travel more. I have tried to learn English for several years now, and I can
read and write okay, but when it comes to speaking, I am too shy to try. I need to
connect with other English students so that I can practice and become more confident.
