Step #1
Listen to the original, fast conversation clip
Click here to listen to the original, fast conversation clip.

Tip: Listen 3 times and try to write what you hear (page 2). You will probably miss
many words, but that’s okay. Go to step 2 next.

Step #2
Listen to the slow version of the conversation clip
Click here to listen to the slow version of the conversation clip.

Tip: Listen 3 times and try to write what you hear (page 2). The slow version does not
use any reductions or linking, so you can compare it with the fast, original version.

Step #3
Write everything that you hear
Tip: As you listen to the fast and slow versions, write everything that you hear.

Step #4
Check your listening skills with the transcript

Margie: I home schooled my children, and that was a big thing way back when.

Vanessa: Not the norm.

Margie: Not the norm.

Vanessa: Yeah, that's kind of typical of the US though, that people do do things

differently.

Margie: Yeah.

Vanessa: Not everyone follows the same pattern.

New Vocabulary

Way back when: a casual way to say “a long time ago”; Way back when, I would
stay up late and wake up early. I can’t do that anymore, I need more sleep.

The norm: something that is common or normal; Traveling the world is not the
norm where I live, but I am so glad I experienced it!

Do do: the first “do” is used as emphasis; the second “do” goes with the
expression “to do things”; it might seem a little strange to have two “do’s”
together, but it’s perfectly natural; We do do things together, but we have to
plan for it.

conversation clips from one, two, and sometimes three speakers!
Some speakers will be easier to understand, some will be harder.
This is exactly like real life!
● Recognize pronunciation and vocabulary by listening to native English
speakers at different rates of speed. You’ll listen to conversation clips at a fast
speed and a slow speed!
● Speak like native English speakers. By training your ears to listen to native
English speakers, you’ll soon be able to imitate how they speak!
● Understand English TV shows and movies more clearly. By the end of the
month you’ll be amazed at how much easier this will be!
