The world has seen many advancements in science and technology from the beginning of the twentieth

century, and as 21st century millennials we have witnessed this change from very different perspectives.
But the universal truth is that the world needs such kind of people who can solve real world engineering
problems. I believe that this is possible if we can bridge the gap between technology and basic
management techniques. The goal would be to build a network of talented and accomplished people to
face these problems head-on. This is possible only by certain individuals who, along with technical
expertise, have a strong interest in technical business. I wish to see myself as an engineer who has a
focus towards managing technology-based programs, I firmly believe I can bring together the right
people in a technical organization to accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of that
organization.

My interest in technology management has its roots in the fact that as a student coming from a family
with an industrial background, I was exposed to the mechanics of a heavy engineering fabrication
company at a young age. Throughout my under-graduation, I was actively involved in the proceedings of
the business. My first real project was when I was given the responsibility to lead the manufacturing
process of a D512 centrifugal basket assembly for Fives-Cail KCP Ltd, India. From understanding the
design and requirements of our customer to logistics management, I learnt a great deal about
engineering turnkey projects. This was my first brush with engineering management. I quickly realized
the importance of building a network and maintaining contacts in the business. After my initial position
of responsibility, I was keen on learning more and I had the opportunity to meet various clients like L&T,
Thermax, BGR Energy Corp, TEAM India (Titanium Equipment and Anode Manufacturing) and many
others. Over the years, I understood that there were several problems faced by the business in moving
forward. The most prominent issue was technological stagnation, the company is in dire need of
someone who can invest in new technology and bring in better projects. In order to be that person, I
realized I needed a certain skillset which included skills like Project Management, Managing
Technological Change, Product Management while updating myself with the latest advancements in
technology.

In my attempt to acquire relevant skills, I chose “Total Quality Management and Reliability Engineering”
as an elective in my fifth semester of study. The course was quite engaging and introduced me to several
concepts like the seven QC tools, reliability, FMEA, Six Sigma etc. It was at this time that I came across a
six sigma certification program being conducted by my college in conjunction with MSME-Technology
Development Centre. I wasted no time in enrolling for the program which proved to be an important
step towards my career as a technology entrepreneur in India; where there is an abundance of expert
and trained manpower coupled with vast scope for development of indigenous technology. I learnt the
basics of Six Sigma such as DMAIC, statistical quality control, lean manufacturing etc., which were taught
by industry professionals and had hands on training in implementing concepts such as ANOVA,
regression analysis, etc.

The Management of Technology program at NYU Tandon is perfectly designed to help me develop the
skills required to integrate technology with management. As an undergraduate student with mechanical
engineering as my major, I had to take up a course “Economics and Principles of Management” in my
seventh semester of study where I learnt the basic concepts of supply, demand, leadership,
communication in an organization, etc., I wish to build on the concepts I learnt through the core
business skills component in the MOT program. I am especially motivated by the fact that the MOT
program at NYU Tandon allows us to create a self-customized curriculum by organizing electives into
specific “knowledge areas”. Moreover, the MOT program at an institution like NYU will be an
opportunity to work with some of the most accomplished professors and compete with international
students from almost every corner of the world. I wish to express my gratitude for taking the time to
review my application and look forward to a positive response from the admissions committee New
York University.
