6.0 METHODOLOGY

7.1 SETTING OUT:

Necessary survey is to be completed and pile points marked. The pile location is set
out with respect to the control points by suitable peg marked at location and
checked by HDFC representative. The permission to start boring will be obtained in
writing as per the checklist. The guide points (min. 3Temporary casing should be
used from the ground level to stabilize the sides of the bore hole. nos.) as per
enclosed sketch in 7.4 are fixed at suitable locations outside the casing for future
reference and the reference points are guarded.

7.2 DRIVING OF TEMPORARY CASING:

Rotary drilling rig fitted with suitable tool (soil boring tool) to be positioned at the
pile point. Temporary casing of length 5 to 6m or as suitable considering the cut off
level of pile to be bored, shall be used from ground level to stabilize the sides of the
bore hole. After necessary checks for verticality of the mast, boring shall be started.
On completion of boring up to about 1m on top, temporary steel casing pipe 12mm
thick will be installed in position using special attachment to the rotary head. The
casing pipe shall be gradually pushed to the required depth in advance of boring;
ensuring verticality. Casing shall be driven preferably in multiple pieces. The casing
pipe shall be lifted by piling rig and lowered in the borehole. The diameter of cutting
tool shall in no case be less than the diameter of the pile minus 75 mm maximum.
The working level should be 0.3m to 0.5 meter above ground level or in ground
level. The centre line of the casing pipe is then checked with respect to the
reference points. Casing pipe is driven in by hammering / tempering / rotating by
hydraulic rig. The thickness of bottom and other casing pipes will be provided
depending upon the diameter of the pile and the subsoil conditions. After concreting
the same is extracted.

a) Bentonite powder, if used in the process should be tested randomly for its liquid limit
and Sand content to verify it with the MTC. Sand content should be 2% maximum &
Liquid limit should be 400% minimum.
b) Bentonite slurry/Polymer should be made by mixing it with potable water using pump
for circulation. The density of the solution should be 1.035 or more.
Further boring will be continued using suitable boring tools. Auger boring may be continued till
water table is reached. However when boring is required to be done below ground water table
and bored muck is not getting collected in the auger, bucket tools (soil / bucket) will be used for
boring. Once the bore has reached the desired depth, the bottom of the bore shall be cleaned by
cleaning bucket and by bentonite/polymer flushing.

Mixing of polymer with water shall be done by using air bubbles as extensive stirring may
damage the chain of polymers affecting the consistency of the fluid. Before mixing polymer with
the water, a little dose of Caustic Soda (NaOH) shall be mixed with the water to maintain a pH
value above 8. Polymer shall be mixed with the water till the slurry reaches a viscosity of 60 s or
more. The polymer slurry shall be taken into the return tank directly for reuse with/without re-
dosing. As Polymer never mixes with the drilling muck, sand percentage of polymer slurry always
remains lower than the stipulated, thus no flushing is even required after cage lowering in case
of use of polymer as stabilization fluid. remove polymer from
methodology. Submit a
separate methodology using
Cleaning of the Borehole polymer

After completion of boring the borehole bottom shall be cleaned by the Cleaning Bucket till all loose,
disturbed or softened material is removed from the borehole base. After cleaning, the bore hole
shall be flushed with fresh bentonite slurry till such time so as to obtain a slurry density of equal to
or less than 1.12 g/ml.

7.6 REINFORCEMENT CAGE LOWERING BY CRANE:

The bar bending schedule based on approved drawing shall be prepared. Reinforcement shall be cut
and bent to required size and shape. Reinforcement cage shall be fabricated at fabrication yard
adjacent to piling location and transported to location by crawler mounted/ wheel mounted crane of
suitable capacity. Specified approved cover blocks shall be provided to reinforcement cage for the
pile. Reinforcement cage shall be lowered in 1 pieces or more depending on the available length of
steel bars & length of pile. Bottom cage shall be lowered inside the borehole and after temporarily
supporting on the casing pipe top and keeping the dowel length projecting above, second cage, if
required, shall be lifted and lapped as per approved drawings or construction drawings. Helicals /
rings shall be tied & tack welded @600mm c/c distance as per specification and main reinforcement
laps shall be welded upto a length of 10 D on both sides to provide more rigidity to the cage. The
cage shall then be lowered further in the borehole. Alternatively, both the cages may be lapped &
Page 9 of 12

welded on ground & the entire cage shall be lowered inside the bore. The reinforcement shall
project above the cut off level as per GFC drawing; I.e. upto 36 D or 750mm above cut-off level.

as per GFC drawing

or 36D or 750 mm
whichever is more

7.7 REINFORCEMENT COVER BLOCK:

Circular Cover Block 80 mm dia shall be made and fixed to helical as mentioned in drawings. The
cover block shall be provided at approximately meters intervals and suitably staggered.

100mm dia
minimum Strength of cover
block should be same of
7.8 Flushing of the Borehole concrete using in pile

After lowering of Reinforcement Cage and tremmie Pipe, flushing shall be done using fresh
Bentonite solution of density not exceeding 1.05 gm/cc. Fresh bentonite slurry shall be poured
with force into borehole through tremmie pipe by the help of suitable Pump Arrangement. The
contaminated drilling mud, coming out from the borehole, shall be guided along a channel into a
muck pit provided near to the bore and then to the return tank. This procedure shall be
continued till the density of the drilling mud at bore bottom is less than or equal to 1.12 gm/cc
or as specified in the specification.

7.9 CONCRETING BY CRANE:

Once the flushing operation is complete, hopper shall be attached on top of the tremie pipe for
pouring of concrete. Joints shall be sealed by using 1/4th Kg vermiculite if required. The concrete
shall be placed in the bore through the tremie. Charging plate shall be used before allowing
concrete to flow inside Tremie in first instance and in every instance when concreting operation
will be interrupted for any reason. The bottom of the Tremie shall be 150 mm above the bottom
of the bore. During concreting care has to be taken to see that the tremie pipe is always
embedded in concrete for atleast 1 mtr.
Use of vermiculite wrongly stated. Right use stated as below:-
to ensure that concrete entering the tremie pipe does not get mixed up
Page 10 of 12with the slurry and 1/4 kg of granulated vermiculite shall be poured in
