7.4 Survey:
At least three reference Pillars shall be erected in each building location and outside the piling
area by erecting RCC footing and column or by B/W and marking level and coordinate on the
steel plate embedded on the top of the column. The column with known co ordinate and known
Reduced Level shall be the reference point and BM for that particular building. All the
coordinates shall be verified by HDFC Engineers. Total Station shall be placed atop any one pillar
and pile centre point for each Pile shall be given after verifying each time the other two
reference points. Two reference peg in the right angle direction of Pile centre point at 2 to 3m
away from the pile centre points shall be marked in each pile and all the points given by the
surveyor shall be cross verified by JMC Site Engineer/s for minimizing human errors. A protocol
with a heading ‘Reference Point for Checking Pile Location’ shall be maintained and signed by
JMC Surveyor and JMC Site Engineer, after checking coordinates of each pile points, and before
offering HDFC Engineers for checking. Temporary benchmarks of sufficient number shall also be
fixed in the same manner for ease of work.
Pegs driven in the ground at d1 & d2 m from center and at right angle to each other, before
starting of driving of liner.
d1 d2
Rig shall be centered on pile point. Base machine with rotary drill shall be positioned on firm
leveled ground. The level of base-machine shall be checked with the help of spirit level on the
base frame. The casing shall be driven with the help of hydraulic press & its verticality shall be
checked before starting boring operation. The diameter of the boring tools/Auger shall be 75mm
shall not be less than 75 mm shall not be less than 75 mm
less than the diameter of the pile.
only bentonite
Initial Boring of about 1.5/2.5 meters shall be done by using auger attached with the Hydraulic
Rotary Rig. The diameter of cutting tool shall be lesser than the outside diameter of casing minus
75mm. Bentonite/Pile Polymer tanks, made with 5/6 mm thick MS Plate & stiffened in every
corner with ISMC 75/ISA 75 shall be placed outside the piling area. One bentonite/Polymer tank
per rig shall be positioned on the ground and each tank (MS/ made of bricks) shall be fitted with
at least 15 HP capacity vertical pump for mixing bentonite in the tank and for pumping it on the
pile boring while pile driving by rotary rig. Bentonite slurry shall be prepared by mixing
bentonite/Polymer powder with water to the required density in vats and its density and
viscosity (as per Table 1) shall be checked as per specification. Bentonite slurry shall be filled up
upto the level of subsoil water or upto the bottom of Casing. Normally density of fresh bentonite
slurry shall be kept between 1.03 to 1.1 g/ml. Bentonite/Polymer suspension shall be filled into
the pile bore for stabilization of sides, as and when required, before starting boring, upto the
bottom of temporary casing. The hole shall be always kept almost full with the bentonite slurry
shall be agitated time to time to avoid formation of sedimentation cakes. The level of Bentonite
in the pile bore shall always be maintained 1.5 m above the bottom of casing or ground water
table which ever is higher. The properties of bentonite slurry, if bentonite is used shall be as per
the specification.
The drilling mud shall be used at least from the level of
sub-soil water or from the level of bottom of M.S. liner
depending upon site conditions and the hole shall then
be always kept almost full with the fluid which should
preferably be kept in motion

a) Bentonite powder, if used in the process should be tested randomly for its liquid limit
and Sand content to verify it with the MTC. Sand content should be 2% maximum &
Liquid limit should be 400% minimum.
b) Bentonite slurry/Polymer should be made by mixing it with potable water using pump
for circulation. The density of the solution should be 1.035 or more.
Further boring will be continued using suitable boring tools. Auger boring may be continued till
water table is reached. However when boring is required to be done below ground water table
and bored muck is not getting collected in the auger, bucket tools (soil / bucket) will be used for
boring. Once the bore has reached the desired depth, the bottom of the bore shall be cleaned by
cleaning bucket and by bentonite/polymer flushing.
Mixing of polymer with water shall be done by using air bubbles as extensive stirring may
damage the chain of polymers affecting the consistency of the fluid. Before mixing polymer with
the water, a little dose of Caustic Soda (NaOH) shall be mixed with the water to maintain a pH
value above 8. Polymer shall be mixed with the water till the slurry reaches a viscosity of 60 s or
more. The polymer slurry shall be taken into the return tank directly for reuse with/without re-
dosing. As Polymer never mixes with the drilling muck, sand percentage of polymer slurry always
remains lower than the stipulated, thus no flushing is even required after cage lowering in case
of use of polymer as stabilization fluid. remove polymer from
methodology. Submit a
separate methodology using
Cleaning of the Borehole polymer
After completion of boring the borehole bottom shall be cleaned by the Cleaning Bucket till all loose,
disturbed or softened material is removed from the borehole base. After cleaning, the bore hole
shall be flushed with fresh bentonite slurry till such time so as to obtain a slurry density of equal to
or less than 1.12 g/ml.
welded on ground & the entire cage shall be lowered inside the bore. The reinforcement shall
project above the cut off level as per GFC drawing; I.e. upto 36 D or 750mm above cut-off level.
100mm dia
minimum Strength of cover
block should be same of
7.8 Flushing of the Borehole concrete using in pile
After lowering of Reinforcement Cage and tremmie Pipe, flushing shall be done using fresh
Bentonite solution of density not exceeding 1.05 gm/cc. Fresh bentonite slurry shall be poured
with force into borehole through tremmie pipe by the help of suitable Pump Arrangement. The
contaminated drilling mud, coming out from the borehole, shall be guided along a channel into a
muck pit provided near to the bore and then to the return tank. This procedure shall be
continued till the density of the drilling mud at bore bottom is less than or equal to 1.12 gm/cc
or as specified in the specification.
Workability of concrete & testing of concrete cubes to be done as per specification requirements
or following IS. Cubes shall be tested to know 7 days and 28 days strength on a regular basis.
Safe working Procedure of HDFC for Piling work shall be followed strictly.
PRECAUTIONS:
Pile location shall be barricaded.
Excavator use for excavation must have reverse horn and swing horn.
Skilled Excavator / JCB operators, will be engaged for the work. They will be
educated and trained as per guidelines of safety regulations, about the procedures
of the job and high degree of risks involved in the job.
Caution boards indicating danger will be fixed at proper place.
Safe access should be provided.

Workability Test shall be carried out on the concrete on arrival of Transit Mixer from Batching
plant and records shall be maintained in a specific format. Test Cubes shall be cast as specified
and the 07 days as well as 28 days strength results shall be submitted to the Customers. Cube
Identifications shall be embossed on cubes with date of casting, structure identification,
concrete grade and reference number.
The reinforcement cages, fabricated as per approved Bar Bending Schedule, shall be inspected
as per AFC drawing and inspection checklist before lowering into the bore of pile. While lowering
the tremmie pipes, the length of each pipe shall be entered in a specific format and removal of
the pipes shall also be recorded in the same format. Removal of tremmie Pipes shall be
monitored very carefully to eradicate the chances of accidental withdrawal from concrete.
Viscosity of stabilization slurry shall be checked by Marsh cone. Hydrometer shall be used for
checking density of slurry. Mud balance shall be used to know the sand content of the slurry.
