1. Introduction
The new curriculum of NIFT attempts to give the student a rich repertoire of experience and
understanding that will hopefully inculcate a desire and a capability for lifelong learning and will stand
him or her in good stead in these disruptive times of change.
Industry engagement is envisaged as a learning process which, by providing exposure to the students in
real life working environment as part of an academic curriculum helps them to develop and enhance
academic, personal and professional competencies coupled with deeper understanding of the ethics and
values that distinguish a good professional. A significant part of the engagement programme is based on
regulated exposure of the students to the industry environment as part of the course curriculum under the
guidance of both academia and industry.
The revised curriculum structure of NIFT arrived through deliberations, workshops and interactions
involving internal experts and eminent academicians, industrialists and NIFT Alumni envisaged the
necessity and importance of Industry engagement through
• Interaction with Industry leaders and alumni in the classroom
• Sponsored classroom projects
• Industry visits
• Exposure to exhibitions and fairs
• Internships
• Joint research endeavours
• hands on practical learning experience in industry environment
to be transacted within the curriculum structure. Critical to this new perspective would be the planning of
Industry Engagements and scheduling them in coordination with the industries as per the requirement to
transact the new curriculum in the UG & PG Programmes offered by NIFT and its campuses.
Students pursuing various UG & PG programmes in Design, Technology and Management disciplines
must successfully endeavor in industry engagement as planned in the course curriculum of the respective
programmes they are enrolled into with view to make them Industry Ready Professionals with clear
understanding of its demands and competencies.
This initiative requires sustained engagement with various organizations within this country and outside
as well that are capable of providing a structured alignment to the NIFT’s industry engagement
framework for students to explore, develop, manage and ascertain hands-on experience to:
i. get insight to real time challenges
ii. apply critical thinking and strengthen problem solving
iii. apply knowledge learned
iv. acquire practical skills of the trade
v. strengthen work ethics and values
vi. gain interpersonal skills
These guidelines are applicable for identification and selection of organisations / experts / places by NIFT
for subject/module transaction in the case of Industry Engagements, and for the conduct of appropriate,
timely interventions in this regard.
2. Definitions:
2.1 Industry: private and public entities including manufacturing units, retail establishments,

consulting firms, management firms, testing facilities, design studios, research institutions,
government bodies/agencies, private agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who have
professional expertise in any of the areas of engagement identified in subjects offered by the
departments as part of course curriculum.
2.2 Industry Expert: A Professional who has acquired knowledge and skills through work
experience and/or practice over the years in a particular field or subject.

3. Process of Industry Engagement
1. Planning effective strategies for collaboration with various Industries and Experts from
the Industry / NIFT Alumni
2. Identifying appropriate Industries and other places / fairs / seminars of relevance and
engaging Industry Experts & NIFT Alumni
3. Create an understanding with the identified industries, experts and alumni to
successfully transact Industry Engagement mandates.
In every semester, the student would be expected to undergo various industry engagements listed under
section 2.3 Industry Engagement Classification of this policy as part of academic transactions. Each
department would schedule the industry engagements as per requirement of various subjects imparted in
each semester, in the industry/experts/alumni identified for this purpose.
The determination of the industry engagement will be specific to the course offered in the campus
depending on the nature of available avenues and the most appropriate fit that the campus is able to make.
The Industry engagement will happen in all semesters as mandated in the approved course curriculum for
UG & PG programmes.
3
• Develop semester-wise and subject-wise Industry Engagement Schedule in coordination with
identified industries or any other place of visit in line with the learning outcomes given and
determine the framework for transaction, assessment and evaluation of the module.
• Liaison with the Industry captains to arrive at a definite schedule for such visits and identify the
resource person from the industry to coordinate various activities planned as part of industry -
academic transaction with reference to Industry Engagement. Coordinate the transaction of the
academic modules or classes (as the case may be) in the industry or any other place of relevance.
• Undertake the necessary procedure for various engagement processes wherever required, and
organize logistics, study materials and engage industry experts as needed
• In case suitable industries are not available in the vicinity, the respective Campus may coordinate
with the nearest NIFT Campus with Industry presence for engagements.
• Canvas, identify and coordinate sponsored classroom projects for all the batches of students in
the campus in the given semester required to undertake live classroom projects.
A new budget sub head is to be incorporated in the Annual budget of the NIFT campus to
indicate the expenditures for industry engagement, which are to be generally met from the
internal fee and other revenue of the campus. In case of inadequate funds, the matter must be
taken up with the Head office for appropriate allocation of resources.
In order to organise the overall requirement for Industry Engagements at campus level, the below
procedure should be followed, at least three months prior to start of the annual academic session: -
5.1 Step 1a: Mapping the course, semester and subject in the campus with identified element of
industry engagement
The campus will undertake a one time exercise annually involving all the faculty to freeze the course,
the semester and the subject where particular industry interface has been proposed to be undertaken as
per Annexure -1. Determination of nature and number of Industries / Fairs / Exhibitions / Experts /
Alumni required for each subject will also have to be done. The exercise would be ideally undertaken
at least two to three months before the commencement of the academic year.
Most Industry visits are to be undertaken universally by a class, but there may be instances of fairs,
exhibitions or competitions where only representatives of a particular class get the opportunity to
attend. In such an instance, the chairperson of the department will provide the terms and basis for
selection of candidate(s) from the campus for the event, which will be undertaken in fair and
transparent manner by the campus. On return, the participants of such events would be expected to
give a full presentation to the class of the experience and learnings thereon.
4
This would include drawing up list of industry mentors for each campus. The Industry mentor list of
the campus should be shared with the Dean and the Head Industry and Alumni Affairs.
A table to capture the details of the courses offered in the campus and the details of Industry
Engagement may be seen as below (illustrative example):
As far as possible, Industries / experts / alumni should be sourced within a 100 km radius. Exception is
made for campuses, that are either new and upcoming, or are not located in an educational hub –ie.,
Srinagar, Kangra, Rae Bareli, Shillong, Jodhpur and Kannur- where a distance up to 300 km may be
considered as “vicinity of the campus” for the purpose of Industry Engagement.
In the case of unavailability of any resources in the “VICINITY” for Industry Engagement in a
particular Campus, the parent campus shall identify the resources in the neighboring host campus (any
Industry centric NIFT Campus in close vicinity) to coordinate transaction of such subject with the help
of the identified host campus. The Campus director and CAC in consultation with RIC and CCs may
draw a schedule and budget to transact the same with prior information to the Dean(Academics) and
the Campus Director & CAC of the host Campus.
For example, if NIFT Srinagar campus would require the Fashion Design course to undertake Industry
Engagements as listed I Annexure -1 by Chairperson of the Fashion Design Department and the
relevant resources are unavailable for transacting the stipulated Industry Engagement, NIFT Srinagar
may coordinate either with the host campuses, in this case NIFT Kangra / NIFT Delhi / NIFT Jodhpur
to transact subjects with Industry engagement. Such transactions may be planned in modular format /
Video Conferencing or any other feasible means as decided and approved, enabling the modules of the
host and the requesting campus run concurrently or at different periods of time during one semester.
Where video conferencing is adopted, the 300 km restriction rule will not apply, as the connect
established is virtual.
5
A table to capture the details of the courses offered in the campus and the details of Industry
Engagement may be seen as below (illustrative example):
The Campus may develop a long list of resources available in the vicinity including Industries,
Museums, Galleries, Fairs, Seminars, Test Centres, Research Institutions, Experts, NIFT Alumni etc.,
for engaging their services for Industry Engagement Classification activities.
If more than the required number of resources has been identified and suitable for engagement
process, the campus would need to decide which / who among them would be the best fit for the
specific content and learning outcomes proposed taking into consideration the proposed course plan
and the assessment methodology. An LASC for industry engagement would be constituted headed by
the CAC and comprising the RIC and CCs of concerned departments. The recommendations of the
LASC would be placed before the Campus director, who shall finalise the resource list in consultation
with the CAC.
In case of lecture series or classroom based interactions, or where part curriculum in industry
environment is entailed, Faculty handling the subject may strictly adhere to the scope and the learning
outcome of the concerned subject and also share the subject guidelines with the resource person(s)
identified to be followed for delivery of the specific subject to finalise their plan and methodology for
their area/subject of expertise.
