INTRODUCTION
The rise in global competition has prompted organizations to devise strategies to have a
talented and innovative workforce to gain a competitive edge. Developing an internship
policy is an impactful strategy for creating a future talent pool for the industry. VTU has
initiated industrial internship at the graduate level in technical institutes. The main aim of
these initiatives is enhancement of the employability skills of the students passing out
from Technical Institutions. The internship experience will augment outcome-based
learning process and inculcate various attributes in a student in line with the graduate
attributes defined by the NBA.

OBJECTIVES
Internships are educational and career development opportunities, providing practical
experience in a field or discipline. They are structured, short-term, supervised placements
often focused around particular tasks or projects with defined timescales. The internship
has to be meaningful and mutually beneficial to the intern and the organization. It is
important that the objectives and the activities of the internship program are clearly
defined and understood. Following are the intended objectives of internship training:
1. Will expose Technical students to the industrial environment, which cannot be
simulated in the classroom and hence creating competent professionals for the
industry.
2. Learn to apply the Technical knowledge in real industrial situations
3. Exposure to the current technological developments relevant to the subject area of
training.
4. Experience gained from the ‘Industrial Internship’ in classroom will be used in
classroom discussions.
Dept. of Electronics & Telecommunication 3
Engineering, B.I.T.
Internship Guidelines and Evaluation 18TEL85
5. Gain experience in writing Technical reports/projects.
6. Expose students to the engineer’s responsibilities and ethics.
7. Familiarize with various materials, processes, products and their applications along
with relevant aspects of quality control.
8. Promote academic, professional and/or personal development.
9. Expose the students to future employers.
10. Understand the social, economic and administrative considerations that influence the
working environment of industrial organizations
11. Create conditions conducive to quest for knowledge and its applicability on the job
12. Understand the psychology of the workers and their habits, attitude and approach to
problem solving.

BENEFITS OF INTERNSHIP
1. Opportunity to see how the theoretical aspects learned in classes are integrated into
the practical world.
2. Opportunity to learn new skills and supplement knowledge.
3. Opportunity to practice communication and teamwork skills.
4. Opportunity to learn strategies like time management, multi-tasking etc in an
industrial setup.
5. Makes a valuable addition to their resume.
6. Enhances their candidacy for higher education.
7. An opportunity to get hired by the Industry/ organization.
8. Practical experience in an organizational setting.
9. Creating network and social circle and developing relationships with industry
people.

INTERNSHIP CALENDAR OF EVENTS
The general procedure for arranging internship is given below:
Step 1: Request Letter/ Email from the department office of the college should go to
industry to allot various slots of 4-6 weeks during summer vacation as internship
periods for the students. Students request letter/profile/ interest areas may be
submitted to industries for their willingness for providing the training. (Sample
attached).
Step 2: Industry will confirm the training slots and the number of seats allocated for
internships via Confirmation Letter/ Email. In case the students arrange the
training themselves the confirmation letter has to be submitted to the department.
Step 3: Students on joining Training at the concerned Industry / Organization should
submit the Joining Report/ Letters / Email.
Step 4: Students undergo industrial training at the concerned Industry / Organization. In-
between Faculty Member(s) evaluate(s) the performance of students once/twice by
visiting the Industry/Organization and Evaluation Report of the students is
submitted in department.
Step 5: Students will give a presentation about their internship to the faculty.
Step 6: Students will submit training report after completion of internship.
Step 7: Training Certificate to be obtained from industry.

MANAGING/ FACILITATING THE INTERN(S)

Monitoring of Intern’s progress every day: Daily progress report of Intern is to be
evaluated by industry supervisor. Maximum use of short-term internship has to be
ensured for the intern as well as industry.
Periodically, examine what the intern has produced and make suggestions. Weekly
supervision meetings can help to monitor the intern’s work.

STUDENT’S DIARY LOG

The main purpose of writing daily diary is to cultivate the habit of documenting and to
encourage the students to search for details. It develops the students’ thought process and
reasoning abilities. The students should record in the daily training diary the day to day
account of the observations, impressions, information gathered and suggestions given, if
any.

Dept. of Electronics & Telecommunication 6

Engineering, B.I.T.
Internship Guidelines and Evaluation 18TEL85
The daily training diary should be signed after every day by the supervisor/ in charge of
the section where the student has been working. The diary should also be shown to the
Faculty Mentor visiting the industry from time to time and got ratified on the day of his
visit.
Student’s Diary and Internship Report should be submitted by the students along with
attendance record and an evaluation sheet duly signed and stamped by the industry to the
Institute immediately after the completion of the training. It will be evaluated on the basis
of the following criteria:
 Regularity in maintenance of the diary.
 Adequacy & quality of information recorded.
 Thought process and recording techniques used.
 Organization information.

INTERNSHIP REPORT
After completion of Internship, the student should prepare a comprehensive report to
indicate what he/she has observed and learnt in the training period. The student may
contact Industrial Supervisor/ Faculty Mentor/ for assigning special topics and problems
and should prepare the final report on the assigned topics. Daily diary will also help to a
great extent in writing the industrial report since much of the information has already
been incorporated by the student into the daily diary. The training report should be signed
by the Internship Supervisor and Faculty Mentor. The Internship report will be evaluated
on the basis of following criteria:
i. Originality.
ii. Adequacy and purposeful write-up.
iii. Organization, format, drawings, sketches, style, language etc.
iv. Variety and relevance of learning experience.
v. V. Practical applications, relationships with basic theory and concepts taught in
the course.

MONITORING & EVALUATION OF INTERNSHIP

The industrial training of the students will be evaluated in three stages:
 Evaluation by Industry.
 Evaluation by faculty supervisor on the basis of site visit(s).
 Evaluation through seminar presentation/viva-voce at the Institute.
Dept. of Electronics & Telecommunication 7
Engineering, B.I.T.
Internship Guidelines and Evaluation 18TEL85
EVALUATION BY INDUSTRY
The industry will evaluate the students based on the Punctuality, eagerness to learn,
Maintenance of Daily Diary and skill test in addition to any remarks.

EVALUATION THROUGH SEMINAR PRESENTATION/VIVA-

VOCE
The student will give a seminar based on his/her training report the evaluation will be
based on the following criteria:
 Quality of content presented.
 Proper planning for presentation.
 Effectiveness of presentation.
 Depth of knowledge and skills.
 Attendance record, daily diary, departmental reports shall also be analyzed along with
the Internship Report.

Presentation.
One of the most important skills which the internship aims is to assess student’s ability to
communicate the ideas and work. As part of the assessment, they are required to render a
Presentation of their internship to the project committee, comprising of guide and co-
evaluator. Students have to meet the co-evaluators and fix the time and date during the
specified dates. The time allotted for presentation is 30 minutes and viva 10 minutes
Ensure the presentation is within given time limit.
