INTRODUCTION
The rise in global competition has prompted organizations to devise strategies to have a
talented and innovative workforce to gain a competitive edge. Developing an internship
policy is an impactful strategy for creating a future talent pool for the industry. VTU has
initiated industrial internship at the graduate level in technical institutes. The main aim of
these initiatives is enhancement of the employability skills of the students passing out
from Technical Institutions. The internship experience will augment outcome-based
learning process and inculcate various attributes in a student in line with the graduate
attributes defined by the NBA.
OBJECTIVES
Internships are educational and career development opportunities, providing practical
experience in a field or discipline. They are structured, short-term, supervised placements
often focused around particular tasks or projects with defined timescales. The internship
has to be meaningful and mutually beneficial to the intern and the organization. It is
important that the objectives and the activities of the internship program are clearly
defined and understood. Following are the intended objectives of internship training:
1. Will expose Technical students to the industrial environment, which cannot be
simulated in the classroom and hence creating competent professionals for the
industry.
2. Learn to apply the Technical knowledge in real industrial situations
3. Exposure to the current technological developments relevant to the subject area of
training.
4. Experience gained from the ‘Industrial Internship’ in classroom will be used in
classroom discussions.

8. Promote academic, professional and/or personal development.
9. Expose the students to future employers.
10. Understand the social, economic and administrative considerations that influence the
working environment of industrial organizations
11. Create conditions conducive to quest for knowledge and its applicability on the job
12. Understand the psychology of the workers and their habits, attitude and approach to
problem solving.
BENEFITS OF INTERNSHIP
1. Opportunity to see how the theoretical aspects learned in classes are integrated into
the practical world.
2. Opportunity to learn new skills and supplement knowledge.
3. Opportunity to practice communication and teamwork skills.
4. Opportunity to learn strategies like time management, multi-tasking etc in an
industrial setup.
5. Makes a valuable addition to their resume.
6. Enhances their candidacy for higher education.
7. An opportunity to get hired by the Industry/ organization.
8. Practical experience in an organizational setting.

2. The Internship can be carried out in any industry/R&D Organization/Research
Institute/Institution of national importance / professional bodies/Govt. or VTU
recognized research institute and centers/reputed private and public sectors.
3. (a) The Department/college shall nominate staff members to guide and supervise.
(b) The Internal Guide shall visit or monitor the progress of Internship training
and evaluate periodically.
4. The students shall report the progress of the internship to the guide in regular

5. After the completion of internship, students shall submit a report with completion
and attendance certificates to the Head of the Department with the approval of
both internal and external guides.
6. There will be 50 marks for CIE (Seminar:25,Internship report:25) and 50 marks
for Viva-Voce conducted during SEE. The minimum requirement of CIE and SEE
marks shall be 50% of the maximum marks.
7. The internal guide shall award the marks for seminar and internship report after
evaluation. He/she may also be the internal examiner for Viva – Voce conducted
during SEE.
8. The Viva – Voce examination shall be conducted batch wise with the internal and
external examiners appointed by the respective board of Examiners in line with
the Project Viva – Voce. External guides from Industry can also be invited as
external examiner.
External Guides from the Industry if not available in the panel of examiners,
college may be directed to submit the list of external guides guided internship
along with student name, USN and external guide name.
9. The students are permitted to carry out the internship anywhere in India or abroad.
The university will not provide any kind of financial assistance to any student for
carrying out the internship.
INTERNSHIP REPORT
After completion of Internship, the student should prepare a comprehensive report to
indicate what he/she has observed and learnt in the training period. The student may
contact Industrial Supervisor/ Faculty Mentor/ for assigning special topics and problems
and should prepare the final report on the assigned topics. Daily diary will also help to a
great extent in writing the industrial report since much of the information has already
been incorporated by the student into the daily diary. The training report should be signed
by the Internship Supervisor and Faculty Mentor. The Internship report will be evaluated
on the basis of following criteria:
i. Originality.
ii. Adequacy and purposeful write-up.
iii. Organization, format, drawings, sketches, style, language etc.
iv. Variety and relevance of learning experience.
v. V. Practical applications, relationships with basic theory and concepts taught in
the course.
Presentation.
One of the most important skills which the internship aims is to assess student’s ability to
communicate the ideas and work. As part of the assessment, they are required to render a
Presentation of their internship to the project committee, comprising of guide and co-
evaluator. Students have to meet the co-evaluators and fix the time and date during the
specified dates. The time allotted for presentation is 30 minutes and viva 10 minutes
Ensure the presentation is within given time limit.
8. Proper attention is to be paid not only to the technical contents but also to the
organization of the report and clarity of the expression.
9. Due care should be taken to avoid spelling and typing errors.
10. The student should note that report-write-up forms the important component in the
overall evaluation of the internship.
11. Before taking the final printout, the approval of the concerned guide is mandatory and
suggested corrections, if any, must be incorporated.
