2015 SCHOOL BASED LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND ORIENTATION- A NARRATIVE REPORT

In line with the commitment to train and orient student leaders, the undersigned conducted a school based
leadership training on July 24 to 25, 2015. The participants are the Supreme Student Government Officers,
classroom, Club and other recognized students organization. In coordination with the SSG Officers, and upon
approval of the Office of the Principal, the event was successfully materialized.

The Venue of the training was held at the school’s library building. The activity started at 7:30 in the
morning, with the registration of participants, followed by the opening program at 8:30.

In the middle of the program, the Supreme Student Government, in appreciation to Ms. Heather E. Phelps,
the schools Peace Corps Volunteer received the certificate of appreciation in response to her voluntary works and
accomplishment contributed to the school.
The leveling of expectation was led by John Lourence G. Magracia, SSG President. Here, student leaders
dissected their expectation to the participants, trainers, and the training itself.

The first speaker was Mr. Randy A. Musa, SSG Adviser, he discussed about the overview of the training,
house rules and regulation, and the synchronized SSG’s Schedule of Program and Activities. After the lunch break,
the students gathered again at the library building for the afternoon session.

The topic was Student Discipline, a new way of a classroom penalty, it discussed the production of an eco-
brick made of pet bottles (1.5 liter of soft drinks filled with plastic wrapper trash). Eco-brick are being used as
alternative to hallow blocks and large stones. Video presentation had been used to explain the uses of the eco-
bricks. The topic qualities and characteristics of a good and effective leader originally tasked to Mrs. Rachel
Fesalbon, former SSG Adviser was given to Miss Marimel L. Catajay, the newly hired teacher of Tugdan National High
School for Mrs. Fesalbon ‘s schedule is not available.
It was a live in training, where in a student leader uses the classroom as their quarters. Total participants
composed of eighty (80) students in eight (8) groups. Below is the graph indicating the attendance of the training
per grade level, position, and gender.

The afternoon session ended at exactly 5:00 o’clock, the students in the group prepared their meal for the
evening. Each group has its designated area to prepare. After a group dinner, each student clean-up themselves for
the evening session.
The evening session was started by a community singing; the SSG Adviser again reviewed the house rule of
the training, followed by his topic “how to become me?”- a question to ask to develop oneself. The talk started by a
question; do you really know yourself?, and after is an activity wherein they should look for a things that best
represent themselves and their personality. The student leaders are cooperative in the activities; they are very
willing to talk in front of a group even it’s their first time. After the lecture, they should evaluate themselves, dispose
and disregard their negative traits, behavior and even their personal and family problems. They should write what
they feel that bothers them, the negative traits that they have and burned it to the bonfire prepared by the
organizer. It is a ceremonial burning of a piece of paper that symbolizes that they are disposing those negative
things / feelings written on it. The students gather and encircle the bonfire, followed by a closing prayer led by Mr.
Albert M. Maduro, SSG Co-Adviser. Mr. Maduro assisted the speaker during that evening session.
After the evening session, the kumustahan, and presentation of group talent has been rendered. The
program ended at exactly 10:30 in the evening. The participants proceed to their respective quarters, where boys
are separated from girls.

At exactly 5:30 in the morning, the participants were all up to prepare for calisthenics and morning exercise,
followed by preparation of breakfast and attending to their personal hygiene.
Around 7:30 in the morning, the session was opened by a prayer and presentation of group yell followed by
the SSG Co-Adviser Mr. Albert M. Maduro, the topic assigned to him is the “SSG Constitution and By-Laws, including
Duties and Responsibilities”.

After the break time, The SSG Adviser initiated an icebreaker for them to be attentive with the next topic,
the undersigned was in charge of the topic “writing of minutes” followed by a workshop on how to write a journal or
minutes. Below are the sample output for a beginner, and a first time secretary.
Part of the activity is a boodle fight and ceremonial tree planting. In the boodle fight, students
happily eat together and enjoyed eating their meal. The food was prepared by group leaders and served at
around 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Unfortunately tree planting was postponed due to lack of time and
will be set in cooperation with the Yes-O Club.

The training was ended successfully. The SSG Officers fulfilled their duties and responsibilities in the entire
duration of the training, wishing there would be a Year-end Leadership Training, Recollection and Review of
Accomplishment, but it will depend on the availability of time, another consideration is the redundancy of event
wherein there is also series of trainings being offered that they may attend to like JunLeadO, and Division SSG
Training. The School based training is very timely because the Division Leadership Training is intended solely for the
SSG Officers wherein non-officers are no longer permitted to attend.
