Character Sketch

Leonido is one of those children who are singing and have waited for the Virgin to pass by to give

their gifts. Leonido is the main character of the story in which he have fought his faith to his religion.

He is a person who never let his faith be shaken by others, even though many things are being

offered to him in exchange to his faith. One of the characteristics that is ideal for a Christian is just

like Leonido. His faith to God can never be shaken and it clearly shows how firm the foundation of

his faith and how influential the colonizers was. The contribution of Leonido in the play was that

because of his bravery to fight his faith against Satan, the play becomes intense and interesting which

made it appealing to the viewers. Without Leonido in the story, the play can be a boring one or it

might have a typical storyline.

Looking into the context side, this play was written by Jose Rizal during the Spanish Colonization in

the Philippines which is the time that they introduce Christianity to the Filipinos. One of the main

point of this play is that Filipino embrace Catholicism but not slavery to colonizers. The character of

Leonido in the play represents every Filipino who have fought not only for their faith but for the

freedom to live in peace without the colonizers who are controlling them in their own land. On the

other hand, as the Spanish introduce Christianity, it is a test of faith for them whether to embrace it or

remain in faith that they have before they came. Leonido is one of those Filipino that embraces

Christianity in which made him to have a strong faith and fight for it to those people who are trying

to get it from him. He clearly shows here that if we have stronger faith, God is the only one who can

save us to many challenges in life that we are facing.
