 CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Students play one of the most important roles in the school. They are the

essential resources in education. It is necessary to guide them to observe

discipline in their selves even if they are inside or outside of the school. The most

of the students have a bad attitude towards the rules of the school. This study

seeks to discover a plan for the students to take the rules and regulations

seriously, to achieve organized school, to be a disciplined student and to have a

better environment.

Anonymous (2016) mentioned that, school discipline is often seen as an

important ingredient in the process by which children are enabled to function in

the society because living in the society entails living in association with certain

agreed rules, which govern one’s behavior. Spriegel et al., (1997) stated that

discipline is the force that prompts an individual or a group to observe the rules,

regulations which are seemed to be necessary to the attainment of an objective.

According to Rigby (2000), in schools where discipline is a serious problem, for

example, where students bully others, parents can transfer their children to

‘better’ schools. Since the well behaved students usually perform well their

transfer can affect the overall performance of that school. However punishment

can aggravate behavior instead of curbing it.

 The problem about the indiscipline students is the most issued problem in

school. The behavior of the pupils inside the school reflects on the image of the

institution. There are cases that some of the learners are disobeying the

regulation, for example, they dyeing their hair to have a pleasant looks for people

but they don’t think about the image of the institution. The fact that you are one of

the students in school, you should look decent as a student. This means for an

effective learning and teaching to take place there must be discipline.

The purpose of this study was to seek a solution to enhance discipline of

the students. . The discipline will take place if the school rules are effective. The

students should be enlightening their awareness about the importance of the

rules and regulation of the school. As mentioned by Sithole (2018), if you don’t

have a plan for your students, they will have a plan for you. The teachers must

guide their students and teaching them to develop their own way to have a better

behavior.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to discover a plan or a tool for the students’ awareness

about the rules and regulations of the school. Schools play an important role in

the socialization process of the young people from where they learn to regulate

their own conduct, respect towards others, manage their time responsibly and

thus becoming responsible citizens (Tait 2003). It means that the process of

having a discipline can be done with the guidance of the teachers and the right

and effective way of teaching. Anonymous (2016) in his study revealed that, in
the teaching and learning process certain identifiable problems of indiscipline

militate against its success and achievements. That means for effective learning

and teaching to happen there must be a discipline first.

Research Questions

Particularly, this study sought to answer to answer the following questions:

Scope and Limitation

The study focused on the effectiveness of rules and regulations in

enhancing discipline of Laguna senior High School students in ABM 11-Agarao.

The study was therefore carried out only in one section, ABM 11-Agarao. The

importance of this study is to enlighten the awareness of the students about the

rules and regulations. To make a plan that can help to solve the problem.

Significance of the Study

Students. They are the main source of this study. The result of this study will

make the students aware of rules and regulation in enhancing discipline and how does it affect

their attitude. This will educate the students regarding the proper behavior inside or outside the

school. This will help the students to improve their interpersonal relationship.

Teachers. The role of the teacher is to observe and study between all the participants

in the classroom and they serve as the parent of the students inside the classroom. They

discover the real effect of having a discipline.

Parents. This study will help parents to understand about the importance of rules and

regulation in enhancing their child’s discipline with enough knowledge.

 Future Researchers. The results of this study would serve as a reference for the future

researchers with the same variables being studied.

Definition of Terms

Attitude. The way you think and feel about someone or something.

Behavior. The way a person acts or behaves.

Discipline. Control that is gained by requiring that rules or orders be obeyed and punishing bad

behaviour.

Enhance. To increase or improve.

Institution. An established organization

Regulation. An official rule or law that says how something should be done.

Rules. A statement that tells you what is or is not allowed in a particular game, situation, etc.
