CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Disaster is considered as one of the main environmental problems. Over past 3

years decades, greenhouse gasses such as carbon monoxide (CCO2) and sulphuric

dioxide (SO2) have increase affecting agriculture. Temperature increase indicates

global warming, causing many events occurred such as flood, drought, sea level,

river level, forest fire etc.

According to Anwar, M.R. et al. 2013 the agricultural sector is highly vulnerable to

future climate changes and climate variability, including increases in the incidence of

extreme climate events/ climate in temperature and precipitation will result in

changes in land and water regimes that will subsequently affect agricultural

productivity.

Given the importance of disaster risk preparedness of the farmers especially in

the agroforestry sector understanding and knowing their disaster risk reduction

management may help reduce its adverse impact, hence, this study.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study intends to achieve the following objective to:

1. Determine the socio-economic profile of the community’s agroforestry

practitioners.

2. Verify existing farm systems being practice in the community that address the

impact of climate change and their disaster.

3. Establish community strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in relation to

climate change adaptability and sustainable upland resource management.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research was conducted to determine the disaster preparedness.

1. What kind of disaster you encounter in your farm?

A. Volcanic eruption

B. Earthquake

C. Typhoon

D. Tornedo

2. What kind of preparation you do when disaster comes?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The researcher shall be focusing only on determining the existing farm systems

being practice in Brgy. Del Rosario, Pili, Camarines Sur that address the impact of

climate change and other disaster.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUIDY

This study is very important for at least four (4) important entities:

TO THE FARMERS – The study will provide the farmers information and additional

knowledge on the awareness in facing the challenges on disaster risk that will be

brought by climate change.

TO THE RESEARCHER – Successful result of the study will give the researcher a

challenging experience.

TO THE FUTURE RESEARCHER – All the result and information which can be

derived from this study will serve as reference.

TO THE READERS – The study will provide the readers must impress to the

agroforestry system. Readers must aware to the problems brought by climate

change.

DIFINITION OF TERMS

To make the study easier to understanding, the following term are defined:

AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM – Is this the system of planting crops, livestock keeping

and establishment of woody components that provide the needs of household and in

sustaining their livelihood.

DISASTER – A disaster is a serious disruption occurring over a short or long period

of time that causes widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss

which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own

resources.

PREPAREDNESS – Preparedness refers to a very concrete research-based set of

actions that are taken as precautionary measures in the face of potential disasters/

these actions can include both physical preparations and trainings for emergency

action.
