THE VOICE FROM THE WALL BY AMY TAN

Lena believes that it is very important to know the worst possible thing that could happen. Then you can find a way
to avoid it. When Lena was small, her mother kept on telling her terrible possibilities of what might happen to her
if she wouldn't obey her and keep away from danger, because her mother had an imbalanced view of reality. Also,
because of the incident in the basement, when Lena fell down the stairs, she began to imagine horrible things like
devils dancing around her.

After moving into the family's new house, Lena heard behind the wall that her neighbours were arguing and
fighting frequently and she even thought that the girl might be killed by her mother. There were screams and
shouts all the time, and Lena worried about her. But eventually, Lena discovered that she was wrong - the girl was
much happier than she was.
And later on, since Ying-ying predicted her baby's and her husband's death, Lena came to believe that her mother
could see the future. She was actually a little anxious to wonder what her mother saw in her future.
Years later, Lena got married with Harold, but there were so many hidden problems between them though Lena
herself didn't notice. When her mother came to visit them, she candidly pointed out the problems to Lena, wishing
that her daughter would not remain blind to the problems of their marriage.
Yingying was over-protective of Lena as she herself had experienced losses and disappointment. She was afraid
that Lena's lack of will would allow people to easily influence her. She wanted Lena to grow up strong.

From this story, we understand that no matter what the mothers are doing, they are actually trying to protect their
daughters and help them get away from danger and difficulties. For example, Ying-ying told Lena must not go to
any direction but only school and back home to avoid any dangers. And we should often express our thoughts to
our mothers. Although thinking about the worst possible thing which might happen can help us to avoid it, having
a postive attitude is important too because if you are always concerned about danger, life will be a tragedy and
may lead you to paranoia. Communicating with family members is a good way to express your feelings. We cannot
leave all the secrets in our heart, but we have to share them with the ones we trust, like our family members and
friends. They will always give us the best advice so that we will make the right decision and will not regret
afterwards.
