Veterans per State (2017)

The topic that Grace and I chose was the amount of veterans per state. We had a
difficult time finding the right topic and we had to explore the website before finding it. We had
the idea of doing the average age in each state but the amount of veterans intrigued us more.
We collected our data from the Census Bureau website.

Histogram

Our histogram shows us that the class with 0 - 242,857 veterans is the largest. This
means that most states have 242,857 or less veterans. Our histogram also shows that no states
have any amount of veterans between 971,428 - 1,214,285, and less than 5 states have more
than 1,214,285 veterans. Our histogram resembles the shape of a skewed right graph, which
shows us that more states have a smaller amount of veterans.
Circle Graph

This pie chart shows that a little more than half of the states have between 242,857 and
485,714 veterans. It also shows that a majority of the states do not have more than 728,571
veterans. This chart allows the viewer to easily see the results and compare the different
sections and obtain a better understanding of how the number of veterans varies throughout the
states.
Relative Frequency Histogram

The relative frequency histogram shows that most of the data is at a steady decline
which means that over 40% of states have less than 242,857 and as the amount of veterans
increases, the number of states obtaining that many veterans decreases. There is a gap in the
graph which means that there are no states with more than 971,428 and less than 1,214,285.
The states are either above or below that margin.
Ogive

Our ogive begins with a very exponential pattern, stays constant for one class, and then
slightly increases for the rest of the graph. This shows us that most states have a lesser amount
of veterans, and frequencies decrease as class bounds increase. The class of 971,428 -
1,214,285 veterans has a frequency of zero states, so the line stays straight. The line then
slowly increases as there is only one state in the class after that and two states in the class
following that.
Pareto Chart

Our pareto chart allows us as viewers to easily see what range contains the most states
and which ranges have the lowest amount of states. We can see that the most states fall in the
range 0-242,857 and the least amount of states is in 1,214,285-1,457,142. Differentiating from
the histogram, the pareto chart gives us easy feedback that requires little analyzing by the
viewer.
Time Series Graph

Our data did not have any change over time, so we had to research the number of
veterans in a specific state for multiple years. We could not find the population of veterans in
Michigan for many years, so we used numbers from 2000, 2012, and 2017. Although there is a
lack of data, this graph shows us that the population of veterans in Michigan has decreased
over the last 15 years.

In conclusion, multiple graphs showed the same trends and data analysis was pretty
easy for all too. However, because of our large numbers, a stem and leaf plot was not created
as it would have been hard to read and understand clearly. Also, in our frequency table, we had
to leave out the class limits because Google Spreadsheets made our boundaries with weird
decimals. Another problem that we encountered was making the time series graph because our
data collected was not over time but just one year. Our solution was to research a few different
years for the amount of veterans in Michigan and make the graph out of those points. While
collecting our data, we did realize that the larger states that had a bigger population contained
more veterans; this makes sense because as the population increases, the amount of veterans
will likely increase as well.
