THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Glue is use to bind different materials or to fix broken pieces. In modern time,

glue may vary from industrial and commercial purposes to an ordinary glue used at

home and in school. The first glue used to connect materials together for the repair

of broken ceramics and statue in 4000 BCE. The development of glue industry is

moving forward rapidly, and the creation of stronger and more flexible glues are

continuously being invented.

This study focus on the students who always use glue as one of their craft

material in school. By this study, students will be able to provide their own glue which

is waterproof. It will also help them to provide a presentable output and a convenient

waterproof glue.

The researchers choose this topic to differentiate the waterproof glue to an

ordinary glue. And to how know the significance of creating their own craft material.

This study has unique quality that make it differ from the usual glue they used.

The creation of glue dates to around 200,000 BC, when it was mixed with

paint to make cave drawings last longer. At 4000 BCE, glue was first used to

connect materials together. It was made out from the bones, hides and skin of

animals back then. The ancient Egyptians discovered an important use of glue in the

furniture creation process. Throughout multiple centuries, the creation and repair of

furniture has required significant glue resources. While the Egyptians were the first to

develop the practice, the use of glue in furniture continued through the 19 th century.

According to an article, milk is a whitish liquid containing proteins fats lactose

and various vitamins and materials that is produced by mammary glands of all

mature female mammals after they have given birth and serves as nourishment for

their young. Milk available in the market is processed into powdered form. Research

conducted on milk protein has proven that milk casein is an effective ingredients for

producing waterproof glue.

The Importance of this study is grounded upon practicality of making one’s

own glue. Glue is an essential tool when it comes to craft and art making, especially

when it comes to children’s projects or even home based do-it-yourself projects.

People can save an ample amount of money by making their own glue, thus making

a cheaper alternative to the usual commercial and branded type of glue

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main focus of this study is to create an alternative and convenient

waterproof glue for students.

This study aimed to answer the following question:

1. What is the difference between an ordinary glue and waterproof glue?

2. What is the significance of making homemade waterproof glue?

3. How it will help the students to develop their creativity skills?

Caesin, a protein can found in milk has proven that it has an important role in

production of glue. It can get from milk by adding vinegar into the milk. The glue glue

produce from milk may vary in consistency depends on the amount of milk, baking

soda, water and vinegar. It says that glue made from milk casein is waterproof and it

can be use in bottle lableing and cigarette packaging. (Rommel Papica)

According to Monique Donkerwolcke, Franz Burny and Dominique Muster

Biomaterials (1998) ,Glues and adhesives attach to a surface principally affect

molecular attraction, as long as cements generally work through mechanical

interlocking. The adhesive and its downfall products must be biocompatible:

chemical, clinical, legal, physical aspects are considered; the toxicity of even minor

characteristics needs to be particularly reduced. The idea of bone bonding using

biological materials has been suggest by Gluck, in Berlin, more than a century ago.

The cements are originally liquid or plastic and consist with the irregularities

in the substratum, producing better bonding on rough surfaces. Developed during

the early 1950s, cyanocrylate adhesives attracted the medical neighborhood by their

bonding strength and capability to bond in wet environments.

Polymethyl methacrylate does not connect a chemical bond with bone

but a Cements and adhesives have been used for the fixation of fractures, bond, a

weak bone–polymer joint. Charnley used self-curing acrylic cement to bond a

femoral head prosthesis into a femur. When adhesives are used to bond tissues, the

polymer acts as a fence between the growing edges and delay healing; the adhesive

tends to be fast hidden from the bone by a fibrotic, non-adhesive capsule.

No proof exists as far as the osteogenic potential of fibrin sealing (FS); its

good effect on bone formation has been ques-tioned even if there is some evidence

that FS should impress the early aspect of bone repair and may help to solve the

problem of reattachment of small osteocartilagenous fragments following joint

trauma.

Table 1 and Table 2 shows the physical appearance and effectiveness of using of
waterproof glue in home. In four respondents all of them says that waterproof glue
can be an altenative glue to use in home and it is highly recommended to anyone.
However, homemade waterproof glue can’t be long lasting it can last it up to 4-5
days because of the milk that easily to spoil.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, formulated conclusions and

recomendations that were drawn based on the findings of the study.

Summary

Soon as you mixed the all purpose milk, gelatin with water, a chemical
reaction occurs. When you applied the glue to the happens in ordinary glue. Setting
it aside causes it to dry out, letting the water evaporate which in turn causes the glue
to paper and set it aside to dry, the water in the mixture evaporates, making the
paper with glue hard.

Trial 1
We performed the procedure and put the glue in the jar. Once cooled down,
it was thick and sticky. We tested it on two pieces of paper and I left it to dry for a
while. When I returned, the paper was stuck together. Therefore, the milk for trial 1
successfully turned into thick, sticky glue.
Trial 2
The glue came out a bit different from in trial 1. We repeated the same
procedure and put the glue in the jar. Once cooled down it wasn't as sticky as the
glue from trial 1. We tested it on two pieces of paper and left it to dry. When we
returned, the paper was stuck together. Even though it was not as thick as the glue
from trial 1, it still worked well.

Trial 3

We repeated the procedure and put the glue in the jar. Once cooled down,
it was thicker than the glue for trial 2. I tested it on two pieces of paper and when i
returned, it was stuck together. Therefore, the glue in each trial worked perfectly.

Conclusion

At beginning of our project our hypothesis was if it mixed milk with water and
gelatin, then the milk would turn into glue. I thought this because the heat would
cause the milk to become sticky and thick. Based on the results of our experiment,
our hypothesis was supported. During all three trials, the milk turned into thick, sticky
glue and was able to glue pieces of paper together. Therefore, we conclude that if
milk is mixed with water and gelatin it will turn into water proof glue.

At the end of the trials, we kept the glue in the house of our co-researcher,
but after five days we noticed that it expired. In other words this waterproof glue
experiment only lasts in 3-5 days.

This glue is edible, in other words it is not harmless to be taste by anyone.

Even if people taste it they will not be poisoned because this glue is not originate of
chemical because all of its ingredients are food material so this glue is suitable or
safe to eat.

Recommendations

The researchers recommend this impermeaglue water proof glue to

the students who can’t afford to buy an expensive waterproof glue. By this study,
students will no an expensive waterproof glue since they can create their own.
Moreover, students may need to buy develop creativity skills by progressing this
study. The advantage of this glue is besides of being strong and sticky glue and it
saves you money because it can be made at home it is edible, in other words it is not
harmless to be taste by anyone. Even if people taste it they will not be poisoned
because this glue is not originate of chemical because all of its ingredients are food
material so this glue is suitable or safe to eat.
