1. Introduction
Initial pile load test shall be conducted on Test Pile as per I.S. 2911 (PART IV)-1985
CODE OF PRACTICE FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PILE
FOUNDATION PART 4 LOAD TEST ON PILES.
2. Terminology
a. Cut-Off Level - The level where the installed pile is cut-off to support the pile
caps or beams or any other structural components at that level.
b. Datum Bar - A rigid bar placed on immovable supports.
c. Factor of Safety - The ratio of the ultimate load capacity of a pile to the safe load
of a pile.
d. Initial Test - It is carried with a view to determine the safe load capacity.
e. Net Displacement - Net movement of the pile top from the original position after
the pile has been subjected to a test load and subsequently
released.
f. Routine Test - It is carried out on a working pile with a view to check whether
pile is capable of taking the working load assigned to it.
g. Test Pile - A pile which is meant for initial test.
h. Total Displacement - The total movement of the pile top under a given load.
i. Safe Load - It is a load on a pile derived by applying a factor of safety on
ultimate load capacity of pile as determined by load test.
j. Working Load - The load assigned to a pile according to design.
k. Working Pile - A pile forming part of foundation of a structural system which
may be used for routine load test.

Note :- Anchor Piles installed for the Vertical Load Test shall be used as reaction
piles for lateral resistance

1. Lateral resistance of 2 nos. Anchor Piles = 21.40 Ton*2 = 42.80 (from page no.-10 & 11)
>> 20.00 Ton
(Hence Safe)
T = 5√(EI/nh) = 161.05 cm
T = 1.95 meter
L1 = 0
From fig. 4 on page 15 appendix c of 2911 part 1 section 2
Lf/T = 2.2
Lf = 2.2*1.95 = 4.29 meter
Mf = Q(L1+ Lf)
M = m(Mf)
m = 0.4 (from fig. 3A)
Moment of resistance of pile shaft from Previous page
36.72 = Q*0.4 (0+4.29)
Q = 21.40 Ton
Lateral Load Resistance of Two Piles = 21.40 x 2 = 42.80 say 40 Ton > 16 Ton (Test
Load for Lateral Load Test.
