DESIGN OF REACTION PILES (600 MM DIA) AND METHOD
STATEMENT FOR INITIAL LATERAL LOAD TEST AT MAJOR
BRIDGE -'CULVERT-304'- AT CH-1054/17-19 OF SLICE 101

1. Introduction
Initial pile load test shall be conducted on Test Pile as per I.S. 2911 (PART IV)-1985
CODE OF PRACTICE FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PILE
FOUNDATION PART 4 LOAD TEST ON PILES.

2. Terminology
a. Cut-Off Level - The level where the installed pile is cut-off to support the pile
caps or beams or any other structural components at that level.
b. Datum Bar - A rigid bar placed on immovable supports.
c. Factor of Safety - The ratio of the ultimate load capacity of a pile to the safe load
of a pile.
d. Initial Test - It is carried with a view to determine the safe load capacity.
e. Net Displacement - Net movement of the pile top from the original position after
the pile has been subjected to a test load and subsequently
released.
f. Routine Test - It is carried out on a working pile with a view to check whether
pile is capable of taking the working load assigned to it.
g. Test Pile - A pile which is meant for initial test.
h. Total Displacement - The total movement of the pile top under a given load.
i. Safe Load - It is a load on a pile derived by applying a factor of safety on
ultimate load capacity of pile as determined by load test.
j. Working Load - The load assigned to a pile according to design.
k. Working Pile - A pile forming part of foundation of a structural system which
may be used for routine load test.

3. Test Particulars
a. Type of Test - Initial Lateral Load Test
b. Dia. of Pile - 1000 mm
c. Test Load - 16 Ton
d. Arrangement Required – 16 x 1.25 = 20.00 Ton
e. Least count of Pressure Gauge - 1 Division = 20 Kg/cm2 (Range 0 to 700
Kg/cm2)
f. Dial Gauges - 1 Nos. at cut-off level having least count 0.01mm
g. Hydraulic Jack - 1 Nos.

K.K. ASSOCIATES SHEET NO. 5
4. Test Set-up for Initial Lateral Pile Load Test
a. For Test, the Pile shaft shall be finished smooth by chipping off uneven concrete of the
side of the Pile as far as practicable.
b. A bearing plate at the Test Pile shaft shall be fixed for the Jack to give reaction.
c. For applying the load, Hydraulic jack with calibrated pressure gauge and pump shall
be used.
d. The reaction shall be taken from the 2 Nos. Anchor Piles (600 mm diameter and 22
meter length below COL).
e. A Girder shall be lowered reacting against the Anchor Piles and jack shall be inserted
reacting against the test Pile and Girders with suitable packing.
f. To record the settlements, one Dial Gauge of 0.01 mm sensitivity shall be positioned
in the opposite direction of Jack to measure the displacement directly at COL.
g. The dial gauge shall be held by magnetic holder attached to Datum bar which shall be
resting on immovable support.

5. Test Procedure for Initial Lateral Pile Load Test
a. The test shall run in general as per procedures laid down in I.S. 2911 (PART-IV)-1985.
b. The pressure gauge of Jack and Dial Gauges shall be set to zero before application of
any load.
c. The load shall be applied in increment of about 1/5 of the Safe Load and shall be
maintained till the rate of settlement/ deflection is less than 0.1 mm per 30 minutes.
d. Further next increment shall be applied and shall be maintained as stated in c above.
Increment shall be given till the Final Test Load is achieved and same shall be
maintained for 24 hrs, settlement shall be recorded at the interval of 1 hour (during the
period of 24 hours of maintaining the load).
e. Final Test load shall be unloaded in the same decrement and rebound shall be recorded
at the intervals of 15 minutes.

6. Computation of Lateral Reaction Available for Lateral Load Test

Lateral Test load = 16 Ton

Arrangement required (25 % extra) = 20 Ton = (16*1.25)

Lateral Support/Reaction will be obtained by the following:-

1. Lateral resistance of 2 nos. Anchor Piles = 21.40 Ton*2 = 42.80 (from page no.-10 & 11)
>> 20.00 Ton
(Hence Safe)
