What are the 5 Laws of exponents? exponent
-quotient law of
exponent
-power of a power
rule
-power of a product
-power of a quotient

What do you mean by product law of exponent?

-multiply two
expressions with
the same base.
-add the exponents
while keeping the
base the same

How about the quotient law of exponent? when exponents

with the same base
are being divided,
we simply just
subtract the
exponents to
simplify the
Our lesson is Special Products expression.

Special Products are binomials or trinomials that when

you multiply the products form a pattern.
These are special types of polynomials
a) Square of a Binomial
b) Square of a Trinomial
c) Sum and Difference of two Binomial
d) Cube of a Binomial.
A. Square of a Binomial
- a binomial is a polynomial with two terms

(a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²

1st term
2nd term

Square of Binomial a² + 2ab + b²

(a + b)² a² - 2ab + b²
(a - b)²

Try this example (2x)² + 2(2x)(3)+ 3²

1. (2x + 3)²

Anyone from the class who wants to try example

no.2? (x - 2y)² = x² -2(x)
(-2y)+(-2y)²
2.(x - 2y)²

Okay very good

“Yes ma’am, we
Do you understand class? understand.

Now let’s proceed to another special product which is

B. Square of a Trinomial
- trinomial is a special polynomial consisting of three
terms.

(a + b + c)² =

1st term 2nd term 3rd term

a² + b² + c²
+ 2ab + 2ac + 2bc

Square of Trinomial
a² + b² +c² +2ab
(a + b + c)² +2ac +2bc

(2x)² + y² + (-3x)² +
Try this! 2(2x)(y) + 2(2x)
(2x + y - 3z)² (-3z) + 2(y)(-3z)
=4x²+y²
+9x²=4xy-12xz-6yz

Excellent!

C. Sum and Difference of Two Binomials

-the product of the sum and difference of binomial is
the product of the first terms plus of the second term

(a + b) (a - b)= a(a) + a(-b) + a(b) + (b)(-b)

FOIL method uses to multiply two binomials.

F-irst
O-uter
I-nner
L-ast
a² - ab+ba- b² = a²
Sum and Difference of Two Binomials
- b²
or
(a + b) (a – b) =
a(a) + (b)(-b)= a² -
Examples:

1. (x+2y) (x-2y)
(x)² - (2y)² = x² -
4y²
Who wants to solve no.2?

2. (2a² -3b) (2a² +3b)

(2a²)² - (3b) ² =
Thank you! _______ That’s correct. I can see that you 4a² -9b²
can really understand our lesson.

For better understanding let’s have another example

3. [x +(3a-2)][x-(3a-2)] =

Now let’s proceed to the last topic which is the (x)² - (3a-2)²
= x² -[(3a) ² -2(3a)
D. Cube of a Binomials (2) +2²]
-defined as the multiplication of a binomial 3 times to = x² - (9a² -12a + 4)
itself = x² -9a² +12a -4
1. (a + b) ³= a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³

Cube of a Binomial:
(a - b) ³

Try this! (a)³ + 3(a)²(b)+3(a)

(-b)² +(-b)³
(2x+3y)³ = a³+3a²b+3ab²+b³

(2x)³+3(2x)²(3y)+3
(2x)(3y)² +(3y)³
(3a-2)³ = 8x +36x²y 54xy²
27y ³

(3a)³-3(3a)² 2)+
3(3a)(2)² – (2)³
= 27a³ -54a² +36a²
Very good! -8
