new lesson 2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Drill: Project MDAS

B. ACTIVITY 1: Translate Me!

Direction: Translate the ff. variation statement into mathematical equation.

1. The Volume V of the parallelogram varies jointly as the length l,

width w and its height h.
2. The amount of interest varies directly to the product of its P
(Principal) and t(time).
3. The Heat H produced an electric lamp varies jointly as the
resistance R and the square of the current i.
4. Kinetic energy E varies jointly as the mass m and the square of the
velocity v.

B. Establishing a purpose ACTIVITY 2: Find My Constant.

and Presentation of the Direction: Find the constant of the following joint variation.
lesson 1. y = 10wx
2. z varies jointly as x and y.
X 2 3 4 5
Y 1 2 3 4
Z 1 3 6 10
3. c varies directly as the product of a and b. When the values of a and are 4

and 6, c is 72.
4. r is in joint variation with p and square of q. When p = 144, p = 4 and
q = 3.

Guide Question:

a. How can we translate joint variation? (Answer: Mathematics Equation

and Table of Values)
b. Given x, y and z, where z is the 3rd quantity. How can we translate
joint variation statement into Mathematical Equation?
c. How can you solve the constant of variation given the different
translations?
d. Do you think finding the value of the constant of variation (k) is
important in solving problems involving joint variation?

C. Discussing new concepts Hanging Questions:

and practicing new skills
1. How do we solve problems involving JOINT VARIATION?
2. What are the steps in solving problems in Joint Variation?

There are different applications of variations in various learning fields like

mechanics, agriculture, and even manufacturing. Analyze the problem so you
can form an equation that will represent your word problem.

The concept of joint variation will help them deal with problems involving more
than two variables or quantities like area or volume and other physics problem.

Consider the following steps:

1. Translate the problem into Mathematical Equation.

2. Identify the given. (you can use table of values or listing method)
3. Solve for constant of variation (k).
4. Write the Variation Equation.
5. Solve
6. State the final answer with unit of measure if needed.

Example 1: If z varies jointly as x and y and z = 18 when x = 3 and y = 2. Find z

when x = 9 and y = 12.

Example 2: The variable x is in joint variation with y and z. When the values of
y and z are 4 and 6, x is 16. What is the value of x when y = 8 and z =12?

Example 3: Kinetic energy varies jointly as the mass and the square of the
velocity. A mass of 8 grams and a velocity of 5 centimeters per second has a
kinetic energy of 100 ergs. Find the kinetic energy for a mass of 6 grams and a
velocity of 9 centimeters per second.

(Trivia: The unit of mechanical work and energy in the centimetre–gram–

second system of units is "erg". It comes from the Greek ergon which means
“work”)

D. Developing mastery Activity 3: It’s your turn!

(Leads to Formative
Assessment 3)

LP ___ | 2
Direction: Read and analyze to answer each problem.

1. If x varies jointly as w, y, and z, and x = 16 when w = 4, y = 4, and

z = 6, find x when w = 2, y =10 , and z =3.
2. The area of a rectangle varies directly with its length and square of its
width. When the length is 5 cm and width is 4 cm, the area is 160 cm2.
Find the area of the rectangle when the length is 7 cm and the width is 3
cm

E. Finding practical
applications of concepts Can you give 3 or more quantities that are varies jointly to each other.
and skills in daily living
F. Making generalizations Let’s Wrap Up!
and abstractions about
the lesson Enumerate the steps in solving problems involving joint variation.

G. Evaluating learning
Direction: Read and analyze to answer each problem.

1. A is in joint variation with B and square of C. When A = 144, B = 4 and

C = 3. Then what is the value of A when B = 6 and C = 4?
2. The volume of a cylinder varies jointly as the square of radius and two
times of its height. A cylinder with radius 4 cm and height 8 cm has a
volume 128π cm3. Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 3 cm and
height 10 cm.
