AIW Unit Plan - Social Studies Example
Iowa Core/Content Standards: 1. Understand the historical development of the behavioral sciences and the changing
nature of society 2. Understand the influences on individual and group behavior and group decision making
3. Understand the appropriate research procedures and skills of the behavioral scientist 4. Understand current social
issues to determine how the individual is able to formulate opinions and responds to those issues
Day 1
Lesson: Lecture/Discussion: Abnormal Behaviors defined and differentiated from psychological disorders and
insanity. Students need to read CH 18.
Day 2
Lesson: Quiz over reading and notes from yesterday. Discuss the definition of a psychological disorder and have
students differentiate between cases of insanity, abnormal behaviors and psychological disorders. Students should
be able to explain the concepts of: maladaptivity, typicality, emotionally disturbing behavior, and socially
unacceptable behavior. Emphasize the issues of maladaptivity and social acceptability.
Day 3
Lesson: Lecture/Discuss mood disorders (anxiety, panic attacks, depression, bipolar disorder, phobias, OCD,
PTSD, and post-partum depression). Students will have been assigned these topics and need to present on the
symptoms, causes and potential treatments. The non-presenting portion of the class will ask questions and the
instructor will add additional depth to the discussion.
Day 4
Lesson: Lecture/Discuss Dissociative Disorders (Amnesia, Fugue, Identity Disorder, Depersonalization disorder)
Students will have been assigned these topics and need to present on the symptoms, causes and potential treatments.
The non-presenting portion of the class will ask questions and the instructor will add additional depth to the
discussion.
Day 5
Lesson: Quiz over mood and dissociative disorders. Review and discuss areas of concern with these topics. Then,
lecture/discuss Somatoform Disorders (conversion disorder and hypochondriasis). Also discuss the topics of
Munchausen and Munchausen by Proxy. Students will have been assigned these topics and need to present on the
symptoms, causes and potential treatments. The non-presenting portion of the class will ask questions and the
instructor will add additional depth to the discussion.
Day 6
Lesson: Review and discuss disorders from yesterday’s lesson (somatoform and Munchausen). Today discuss
Schizophrenia. (Why is it considered the most dangerous of disorders?) Students have been assigned different
categories of schizophrenia (catatonic, disorganized and paranoid) and need to present on the symptoms, causes and
potential treatments. The non-presenting portion of the class will ask questions and the instructor will add
additional depth to the discussion.
Day 7
Lesson: Quiz over somatoform disorders, Munchausen and schizophrenia. Review and discuss areas of concern
regarding these topics after the quiz. Today, discuss personality disorders (paranoid, schizoid, schizotypical,
antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissitic, avoidant dependent and obsessive-compulsive). Students have been
assigned these different categories and are to discuss the symptoms, causes and potential treatments. The noon-
presenting portion of the class will ask questions and the instructor will add additional depth to the discussion.

Day 8
Lesson: Students are to read CH 19 on Therapy. Lecture/discuss the historical background of treatment for the
mentally ill, discussing the inhumane treatments and the gradual intervention by governments to improve
conditions. Discuss the importance of community mental health centers versus state hospitals or asylums.
Day 9
Lesson: Lecture/discuss the variety of therapeutic treatments used in serving the mentally ill today. (group therapy,
individual therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, humanistic therapy, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, biological
therapy, drug therapy, electro-convulsive therapy and psychosurgery) Also discuss the goals of therapy.
Day 10
Day 11
Lesson: Test (multiple choice, fill in the blanks, matching and short response essay)
Assessment
Assessment techniques will involve: quizzes covering lecture subjects, observed classroom participation and
questioning techniques and the unit test.

Differentiation
Students are allowed to pick and choose their own topics, which gives incentive for them to do a good research job
on their topic of choice. This also allows students to work to their level of ability and for the instructor to provide
individual help as needed.
