Function NAVIGATION AT THE MANAGEMENT LEVEL

Competence Maneuver and handle the ship in all conditions

At the end of the simulation exercise, the trainee should be able to


execute:
 Berthing and un-berthing under various conditions of wind, tide
and current with and without tugs
Exercise Outcome  Ship and tug interaction
 Use of propulsion and maneuvering systems including different
types of rudder
 Interaction between passing ships and between own ship and
nearby banks (canal effect)

Exercise Area Ship Bridge Simulator Room

Approved Ship’s Bridge Simulator equipped with Radar/ ARPA, GPS, Echo Sounder,
Equipment Needed
etc.

Condition The Exercise shall be carried out in an approved Ship’s Bridge Simulator

Scenario Ownship is berthed along Jurong terminal bound to shift berth to Pasir Panjang
Description terminal. Demonstrate above training outcomes within 60 minutes.

1. Assign the trainee to a particular bridge. For this Exercise scenario you
can assign the trainee either to a BOS or Mini Station Bridge
Operation Simulator.
2. When communicating to the trainee, instructor must use the motor
vessel name of the bridge where the trainee is assigned
3. Load the designated Exercise scenario to the assigned bridge of the
trainee. In case of any technical difficulty in loading the exercise, you
can call the designated technician of the PAC for assistance. (Please
Trainer’s action see manual on how to load the exercise from USB)
Note: You will load the exercise directly from the USB/CD to prevent
the PAC from copying the exercise scenario.
4. Once the exercise is loaded, communicate with the trainee to prepare
the station for this Exercise, the trainee should be only given a
maximum of 10 minutes to prepare. Inform him to report immediately
any technical difficulties in setting-up the bridge.
Note: This is also where the trainee will review the Pilot
card/Wheelhouse poster/Maneuvering booklet

Once the preparation of the exercise is completed, you can call the trainee to
stand by for exercise commencement. Once exercise is started you can
monitor from the instructor workstation the progress on the trainee until the
trainee completed the assigned Exercise scenario.

1. State the intention and specific learning objective of the exercise.


2. Inform the trainee of the initial condition of the exercise.
3. Load the default sample exercise to be able to show different simulator
instrumentation and controls.
4. Conning/ECDIS/Radar/Visual – (Can be power point or actual simulator
Briefing software)
5. Dedicated hardware use (Power point only)

You will provide the trainee a checklist where all key simulator functions
should be check and acknowledge by the trainee that s/he is familiar, this
should also be signed by the trainee.

Trainee should confirm that they can identify and operate all the items in the
Simulator
simulator familiarization checklist. Instructor should make sure that the trainee

1. Plot / Check vessel position regularly by any means.


2. Ensure position along the intended route.
3. GPS panel must be switched ON as ARPA must adapt the ship's present
coordinates by activating the GPS button from the radar screen under the
Candidate’s NAVIGATE menu.

7. If vessel arrives early at arrival position due to over speeding, continue with
due regards to navigational hazards. Do not stop the vessel.
8. Report to the VTS as per the correct reporting procedures.

The candidate has an initial score of 100, and every Performance Criteria
Practical Training violated the candidate will be penalized and deducted from the initial score.

The candidate's performance will be monitored and rated within the specific
duration of the simulation, by the pre-programmed parameters encoded in the
" Simulator Exercise " or Sea System.
