This course seeks to help students enhance their reading, listening,


speaking and writing skills in English. The course will cover the
following: Understanding written texts and evaluating ideas,
Short Course identifying ideas from spoken text and note taking, expressing their
Description opinions and making presentations on issues related to their
professional work, summarizing and paraphrasing written documents,
writing reports (essays) on topics related to various information
technology disciplines.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to help students
 improve their reading strategies (scanning, skimming, finding meaning from context, and
summarizing) and critical skills (including drawing inferences and making conclusions, using
prior knowledge and connecting new information to old information, distinguish facts from
opinion) for processing texts related to information technology.
 apply the skills and strategies (notetaking, distinguishing main ideas from supporting details,
making use of contextual clues) of a successful listener.
 speak about themselves, converse with others, and give an oral presentation in class.
 understand and apply the conventions of academic writing in English.
